figuring out the dcs to make fine art

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

we have a person using craft sculpt to make sculptures how do we figure out how much there worth?

You could use the rules under Proffession skill for earning money with the skill as an abstract. Or you can set a desired value and craft DC for the finished product and use the system described under the craft skill to determine how long it takes to produce it.

that would make it extraordinarily worthless wouldnt it? for art i mean they do have grades of art (and the prices) just no dcs for how to make them

Treat each piece of fine art as if it were masterwork. Adjust the price of the raw materials accordingly, and use DC of 15 or 20 for the target value. Then use Appraise to find the value of the piece, with the value set by the GM.

Pathfinder Unchained actually added a section of skills that might help you out here! The Background Skills added two new skills, which were Lore and more importantly for you: Artistry. Artistry functions very similarly to Craft, and it includes a table with DCs for crafting various works as well as commission prices for them.

And I agree with the line of thought John Napier 698 was on, in terms of adding a masterwork component for truly spectacular pieces. Perhaps for very important life's work kinds of art?

Hopefully this will at least point you in the right direction!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

the formula/process breaks down when you get to something like Picasso or Matisse where the desirability overcomes the base price.
The formula equating DC to value is roughly 25*2^((DC-15)/5)gp.
