How Important is Starship Combat in APs?

My gaming group is about to start our first Starfinder campaign. I am considering playing a Mystic or a Soldier, but neither seem that great in starship combat (unless the soldier focuses on dex).

How concerned should I be with how my character performs on starships? Is this a large part of the game? How optimized should I be?

Thanks in advance!

So far, it seems like a "once per book" type deal, but that might change as the adventure increases in scale. I think if you can be a relatively competent back up gunner and other folks have piloting and such, you should be ok playing your mystic. The soldier would be a solid gunner unless you drop dex hard

second that.

our most useless guy on the ship is our solarian and he's the captain. that being said, the idea of having a party is that someone else has the skills that you don't.

but yeah a soldier should be a pretty good gunner. and throw a skill rank into pilot every so often.

Agreed on the once per book.

Mystics normally go for captain because they have better social skills, except Star Shaman who frequently goes Pilot and then make reasonable gunners or pilots.

Soldier can automatically do the gunner role, although if you don't have a Dex modifier it is likely others will be better. Eventually that full BAB means only the Soldier and Solarian can do it without investing in Piloting. Provided there aren't too many others competing for the gunner position, this can work out alright.

As others said, spread the skills out in the group. Culture seems to come up a lot more than I was ever expecting, but all the skills are useful.

We have ruled gunner stats are best of dex,int or str; dependent on how you visualise the weapon ( just to limit dex a bit)

Have a space fight every other session. I timed tonight's, pc ship versus 3 lower tier fighter class with added complication of a meteor shower. Took 54 minutes and much fun and peril

I really like how they have set up space combat

I noticed that in the adventure path and scenarios as well. Originally when I was looking at it I kinda glanced over culture and did not think much of it but it really does seem to pop up pretty often and I guess that does make sense so good to have somebody with some solid skills in that direction in a party.

It seems in play that if there isn't a specific skill then roll Culture

A mystic can be a very good pilot (invest in Dex, ace pilot theme, and Star Shaman connection) and a soldier can do fairly well in the engineer role (as long as you don't "dump"/neglect Int) as well as in the gunner role. If the group doesn't have an envoy or operative, then a mystic can do well in the captain role, although skills can get tricky at times.

With the recent FAQ on starship combat, you don't "need" to hyper-optimize for roles any more. It's not as if it was that difficult to get most characters into the "very good" category, anyway (unless hyper-optimizing around something else).
