Soft Cover

Rules Questions

Does soft cover stop a large creature from making AoO against creatures moving through what would be a threatened square? I see that is says cover against ranged attacks, and I know that you can't AoO through cover. The question is a large or larger creature with natural reach is a melee attack. I guess I see it differently than a medium creature using a reach weapon, cause well they aren't using a reach weapon, they are using their normal reach.
Likewise, a tiny creature provokes an AoO for entering your square. Lets say 2 tiny creatures enter your square would you get to AoO them both (assuming you have 2 AoO) even though they came from the same direction one behind the other?

soft cover is cover and thus prevents AoOs. Natural or not makes no difference with cover.

Yes, each creature would provoke an AoO since tiny creatures can't provide cover.

Well, that is simply incorrect soft cover isn't cover to melee.

Soft Cover: Creatures, even your enemies, can provide you with cover against ranged attacks, giving you a +4 bonus to AC. However, such soft cover provides no bonus on Reflex saves, nor does soft cover allow you to make a Stealth check.

When making a melee attack against a target that isn’t adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks.

It says “such a as with a reach weapon.” It is not limited to reach weapons. Are you making an attack against a creature that is not adjacent to you? If so, then you use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks. It doesn’t matter if you have natural reach or are using a reach weapon. So soft cover applies.

I’ve seen some GMs apply the low obstacle rules to reach attacks. In that case if the attacking creature is twice as tall as the creature that would provide soft cover, and the creature is closer to the attacker than the target, then the creature would not provide soft cover.

It’s a little unclear if a creature is meant to be considered an obstacle or not.
