Robe of Runes

Spoiler:

This robe is made of crimson silk and emblazoned with dozens of spindly Thassilonian runes, each symbolizing a different type of magical effect or syllable of power. Though favored by wizards, this robe can provide some benefit to any spellcasting creature. While worn, it grants a +4 enhancement bonus to Intelligence and allows the wearer to recall, as a free action, up to four levels of spells per day that he had prepared and then cast. Each time a spell is recalled and prepared again in this manner, the sudden rush of magical energy infuses the wearer with power. For 1 round after recalling a spell, the wearer’s spell save DCs and attack rolls made with spells gain a +2 enhancement bonus.

Des the arcanist get the extra spells?

anyone know?

Scarab Sages

Most likely no, based on the way designers have answered similar questions. Since Arcanists don’t expend their prepared spells, items that recover expended prepared spells don’t work. Pearls of Power, for example don’t work for an Arcanist, but Runestones of Power do. None of that is official, but that’s what Mark Seifter has indicated before. There’s a rules thread somewhere recent trying to get to the bottom of whether Arcanists count as prepared casters, spontaneous casters, both, or neither.

I disagree, it functions if they prepared and then cast it. The Pearl specifically calls for expended slots, whereas this one doesn't.

Scarab Sages

Well I said most likely. It’s really impossible to tell at this point without clarification on the Arcanist. But the robes do say, “Each time a spell is recalled and prepared again in this manner,.” So recalling it is preparing it again, which doesn’t do anything for an Arcanist, because the spell is already prepared. If the robes restored the spent daily spell slot, that slot could, in theory, be used to cast a different spell that they haven’t cast yet for the day, which is also problematic.

Anyway, the rules are murky enough that a GM might rule either way. It’s my opinion that, based on past feedback from PDT members, this is a lot closer to a Pearl of Power than a Runestone, so I wouldn’t count on it working.

Fair enough. Examining the source tells me that it was designed before Arcanists were a thing, meaning I doubt it was intended to work with the ambiguous Arcanist spellcasting system.

A lenient GM, such as myself, would allow it to work, because a player shouldn't get screwed over murky interpretations of rules, but I can see why a GM would say otherwise as well.
