Help creating a Leonine Race (20 RP - Advanced)

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Some of my players in a homebrew campaign were looking for a lion-like race but the catfolk wasn't really cutting it. Theywanted something more "FIERCE" and bulkier per se. These leonines have a vast empire with clear militaristic hierarchy. Lions are in spots of power and authority. "Catfolks" are considered the commoners... Other looking variants (tigers, jaguars, leopards, etc) usually fill different roles in society. How does this look?

Type: Humanoid

Size: medium

Base: Speed 30ft

Flexible: (2 RP) +2 on 2 chosen ability scores. ((This is to allow a greater range of classes on their society))

Cornered Fury (4 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Whenever a member of this race is reduced to half its hit points or fewer and has no conscious ally within 30 feet, it gains a +2 racial bonus on melee attack rolls and to Armor Class.

Fearless (1 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race gain a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear effects. Special: This bonus stacks with the bonus granted by the lucky (greater or lesser) racial trait.

*** Resistant (2 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against mind-affecting effects and poison. ((I don't know if this +2 would stack with fearless... I guess not because of the note about lucky?))

Quick Reactions (2 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race receive Improved Initiative as a bonus feat.

Claws (2 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race receive two claw attacks. These are primary natural attacks. The damage is based on the creature's size.

(1d4)

Darkvision 60 Feet (2 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race can see in the dark up to 60 feet.

Low-Light Vision (1 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light.

Scent (4 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race gain the scent ability.

TOTAL RP: 20

Not bad. I'd make a few changes though...

Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium
Base Speed: (1 RP) 40ft

Leonines are quick on their feat. They hunt down their prey, running them down and tearing them apart.

Advanced: (4 RP) +2 Str + 2 Dex +2 Con -2 Int +4 Wis or +4 Cha

Leonines are strong, fierce, and tough. Males rule, while females make up the bulk of the officer corp of the military. As such, Males have +4 Cha, which represents court politics, while females have +4 Wis. It is well known that it is far more dangerous to be a member of the ruling caste than the officer corp, for the way of advancement within a Leonine court is a duel between a young noble and an older Leonine who holds a desired position. The ritualistic duels often lead to death or banishment for the loser. Regardless of gender, Leonines advancement is almost always from physical dominance. Theirs is not a culture of literature, learning or art. Such pursuits are left to the cat-folk commoners.

Fearless (1 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race gain a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear effects.

Darkvision 60 Feet and Low Light Vision (3 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race can see in the dark up to 60 feet.

Claws and Bite (3 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race receive two claw attacks and one bite attack. These are primary natural attacks. The damage is based on the creature's size.
Powerful Charge (2 RP)

Powerful Charge (2 RP): Benefit: Select one of the race’s natural attacks. Whenever a member of this race charges, it deals twice the number of damage dice with the selected natural attack plus 1-1/2 times its Strength bonus.

Leonines are well known for running down their foes. They leap onto their prey, digging their claws into them and then biting down on the neck. It is said that only the suicidal turn their back on a Leonine.

Natural Armor (3 RP): +2 Natural Armor

Leonines have thick fur coats, that can turn aside the blows of their enemies. It is often said that a Leonine is never unarmed or unarmored. This is partly evolutionary, as Leonine duels are always done strictly based on rules of honor, with neither side wearing anything. This is to ensure fair play, and that the most 'worthy' of nobles will rule. As such, only the Leonine's with the sharpest claws and thickest hide will survive.

Quick Reactions (2 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race receive Improved Initiative as a bonus feat.

Static Bonus (2 RP): Females gain Skill Focus (Stealth) while males gain Skill Focus (Intimidate)

In Leonine society, males in the ruling caste avoid combat as much as possible. For a challenge will end in death or banishment. This makes appearing strong a full time-occupation. The most successful males master the art of intimidation. Females, however, are expected to hunt. Be this enemies of the state, rogue cat-folk, or bandits. From a young age, they are taught to master the art of stealth.

Total RP: 20

3 primary natural attacks. +2 natural armor.

Female Leonines make perfect warpriests, especially cult leader warpriests. They are also natural unchained rogues and slayers.

Female Leonines also make up the clerical caste of Leonine society. It is often said that these wise Leonines are the real power behind the throne, and that it is they who encourage the more hot-headed Leonine males to fight among themselves.

In truth, most important roles of governance in Leonine society are held by the females. It is often said that if you want something done, find the most humble Lioness. For she is likely the most powerful and dangerous.

-----

Male Leonine leaders are expected to be Enlightened Paladins or Scaled Fist Unchained Monks. The nobility take oaths of self-perfection, for it is through perfection that they are supposed to lead. Mechanically, this allows them to gain +cha to their armor class, making them all the more durable.

Mechanical Note: Lvl 1 Unchained Monk, and at lvl 3 take Feral Combat Training. This lets you flurry of blows with your natural attacks, pushing you up to 4 natural attacks per round. This also gives you Cha to AC.

It is, however, fully acceptable for Male Leonines to be barbarians, tapping into their racial pride and anger to tear their foes apart using pure, unchecked strength. As a mechanical note, there is a rage power that gives a gore attack, pushing them up to 4 natural attacks per round at lvl 2. Savage Technologists and Urban Barbarians make up the bulk of these nobles.

Sample Build: Lvl 1 Scaled Fist Unchained Monk, Lvl 2+ Savage Technologist Barbarian. At lvl 3 get a gore attack and feral combat training. Thus, at lvl 3, you can full attack with 5 attacks per round.

There are, however, Leonine rulers who have the spark of magic in their veins. Not the strongest, or fastest, of their kind, they rule instead using sorcerous power. However, they are still Leonine's through and through, and tend to favor magic which enhances their abilities. For duels for prestige and appointment are strict, and the only way that one may harm an opponent is with claw and tooth. Leonine sorcerers are rightfully feared throughout the land.

And finally, just as there is a streak of sorcery in their veins, so too are Male Leonines often cursed with the power of oracles. Like sorcerers, this usually comes about do to pacts and deals made by weaker Leonines generations ago. Leonine Oracles are usually Lunar Oracles (take the Gift of Horn for a gore attack and can also take prophetic armor), or Nature Oracles. They are commonly cursed with Covetous or Legalistic curses.

A simplified alternative, just take a Catfolk and add additional features to get to 20RP (11 to play with). This would alleviate starting from scratch and still offers all the available Alternate Racial Traits and favored class bonuses.

Second option, instead of adding additional traits to a Catfolk, you could just add an additional ability score bonus and bonus feats...
Catfolk Exemplar and Aspect of the Beast as bonus feats, additional +2 to any score or +2 to Str and +2 Con.

Otherwise, I like the builds you guys have so far, or at least a blend of the two.
I think a Nat armor bonus is appropriate and definitely add the Bite attack.
Darkvision is awesome but not appropriate IMO but definitely have Low-Light Vision.
I think the base speed should stay 30ft as Big Cats are slower than Small Cats but the Sprinter racial trait would appropriately showcase their feline swiftness.
