Chase Mechanics from Gamemastery Guide

Rules Questions

In the chase rules in The Gamemastery Guide (pg 232 I think) it says that if you spend a full round moving you can move through three cards, but you have to overcome both checks on the three cards. Is that right? The section on the chase suggests that a 5 card track is a good size, but if a person can move three cards in one turn, given that they make the checks, that chase would almost be over before it even started! Has anyone actually run one of these? How long did it take and was it fun?

No you only have to pass the two check on the card you are on to move forward three cards. Not all characters have a broad skill base to be able to do that reliably, and ,depending on what you are chasing, a single party member with such a skill set may not want to get that far ahead even if they can.

I've run a couple of chases. I enjoyed running them mostly, but the reception from players was very mixed. I would use them again but would allow a way to move without a skill check - I did have a cleric who never got off the first card in one chase.

Oh geez really? That seems weird. In the chase I am planning my PCs will be shackled together at the legs so to move through any one card they will all have to pass the checks. Man, trying to run this has got me nervous. I've done a race before using similar mechanics but never a chase where the PCs need to escape. Its making me kind of nervous to run it.
