Fury of the Abyss and Damage Reduction

Rules Questions

Recently I've read that magic weapons with certain enhancement bonus can bypass Damage Reduction based on Cold Iron, Silver, Adamantine, and Alignment. My question is, could a weapon with temporary enhancement bonus do so? Specifically the bonus granted by the Demon Subdomain granted power "Fury of the Abyss".

Also I've read that the bonus from "Greater Magic Weapon" and "Greater Magic Fang" doesn't overcome Damage Reductions other than magic. If "Fury of the Abyss" neither, is there any temporary enhancement bonus to attack and damage that can bypass the Damage Reductions listened above?

Thanks you in advance.

Fury of the Abyss would not.

Fury of the Abyss (Su): As a swift action, you can give yourself an enhancement bonus equal to 1/2 your cleric level (minimum +1) on melee attacks, melee damage rolls, and combat maneuver checks. This bonus lasts for 1 round. During this round, you take a –2 penalty to AC. You can use this ability for a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

This is an enhancement bonus on your attack rolls. What you need is a magical enhancement bonus on your weapon.

Damage reduction may be overcome by special materials, magic weapons (any weapon with a +1 or higher enhancement bonus, not counting the enhancement from masterwork quality), certain types of weapons (such as slashing or bludgeoning), and weapons imbued with an alignment.

The reason that Greater Magic Weapon doesn't work is because of its built in restriction:

Greater Magic Weapon wrote:
This bonus does not allow a weapon to bypass damage reduction aside from magic.

But there are several temporary weapon enhancement bonuses that do work, including the class abilities of the Paladin and Magus (and probably several others; those two just come immediately to mind).

Generally, only enhancements that specifically say "This does not allow you to bypass damage reductions higher than magic" or "This functions as "magic weapon, greater" have that property. Fury of the Abyss would not work, but the Warrior Spirit fighter advanced weapon training option, the enhancement from a magus' arcane pool, a warpriest's sacred weapon class feature would, and so on.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Also, forgot to include this chart earlier:

Awwww... well, thank you both.
