treantmonk style class guides

Advice

Shadow Lodge

i know the game is still new but i was wondering if there are any treantmonk style class guides out there for the starfinder classes...or if not if anyone was planning on working on them...i'm not really looking for optimization i just like seeing how people rank class features and options...and getting ideas on what kinds of builds people are coming up with

The Exchange

Not sure there's enough content for it to be necessary at the moment in all honesty.

From what I've seen, there's very little discrepancy in power between the classes.

I have seen a number of characters built to look almost the same though. Blitz Vesk Soldier is an example. Pretty much only feat choice and weapon are different on those at first level.

Solarian weapon spec close combat dude. Most of those are indistinguishable too.

Treant's guides came about due to the apparent "tiers of play" in Pathfinder and the sheer quantity of potions available to players (many of which were trap options apparently)

I'm working on one for melee Solarions...

I'm working on something for Technomancers, which seem to confuse people and have a few really bad magic hacks people should avoid.

When you do, Id be very interested.

There just seems to be a weird disconnect between the magical hacks and the actual spell list that I cant get my head around and they just seem very different than Id expect a technomancer be.

I'd like to see some other people's takes on some of the classes, too.

Just looking at the mystic class, they don't get enough spells per day to be a full caster until probably level 7+, but they don't get enough of anything else to make up for it. I haven't read through the technomancer entirely yet, but they look like they may have the same problem.

It seems like everyone's required to grab a gun and put points in dex to be useful in combat. In Pathfinder, dex and con were the only stats that nobody ever dumped. In Starfinder, it looks like everyone will be required to start with at least a 14 dex to be useful, which likely takes away points from whatever your class is supposed to be doing as a specialty.

They have the same thing going on, yeah. I'm not sure I'd call it a problem.

You can also go Str and dabble in melee. That works, too. But yeah, there are no full casters. And, like in Pathfinder, 6-level casters need something to do in combat that isn't spell casting, since they can only do that sometimes.

That's not really a huge difference, to be honest. I've played Pathfinder games where we didn't really have a full caster who could do offensive spells every round, and it worked out fine.

I'm not worried about not having a full caster doing offensive spells every round. It actually seems like it won't matter at all if there are no casters in a party.

I'm worried about the casters not having anything to contribute in combat.

Looking at the level 1 iconic mystic, he has +0 to hit with his melee weapon and +1 to hit with his gun or his ranged cantrip (telekinetic projectile). What are the odds of him ever actually hitting anything?

Although now that I look, it does seem like armor won't be as good at low levels as in Pathfinder, either. Looking in the First Contact book, the CR 1/3 space goblins only have KAC 12, while the CR 1 space pirates are only KAC 13. The CR 3 things that could be boss fights have KAC values of 15 or 16, but that's when the spellcasters actually break out level 1 spells like magic missile or mind thrust that don't need an attack roll.

So maybe I'm overestimating the importance of dexterity for a non-combat focused class. Even with only a +1 dex, they'll still have a 40% chance to hit mooks at level 1 with a basic pistol, which isn't terrible for level 1.

Keskodai is really focused on his casting and magical abilities, and is a bit unoptimized outside that. He's not exactly representative of all casters everywhere.

That said, he has an energy weapon, so his attacks are against an EAC of 11 for up to CR 1, which is a better than 50% shot of hitting, and vs. something CR 3 he's gonna definitely be burning spells (which are scary and powerful when used). So he'll probably do okay. Add in that he has several non shooting-things options in combat (he's a dedicated healer with Channel Energy, on top of his spells), and I think he'll be fine.

His odds of hitting go down a little as he goes up in level, but only a little (he's still hitting on a 11-12 or so), and his casting improves rapidly.

But more importantly, like I said, he's not exactly representative. Yes, most casters should have a 14 or 16 in an attack stat, maybe more. Going Dex 18, Int 16 on, say, an Android Technomancer is a very valid build, for example. Biut that's not really a problem. It's just slightly different from Pathfinder.
