taking cover and breaking cover or two different move actions?

Rules Questions

Just did my first starfinder combat. And i got to say taking cover and leaning out of cover is quite dangerous. In one round I lost all my stamina points at half of my hit points before I was able to shoot and take cover I broke cover by leaning out and taking my attack. Then took all that damage then on my turn fired again then achieved cover again. Going "ouch that hurt....." should have got that riot shield that does not exist in this world. Theres no shield in starfinder as it was pointed out to me by another thread.

So that stuff about wanting a shield aside. Did I do something wrong? Or was the rules applied wrong or misinterpreted? Is five foot stepping a thing in starfinder and can it be used to take cover in the same five foot Square?

You can shoot while in cover without having to step out from it in many situations (Depending on the exact location of your target), it's just that your enemy will get benefits from the cover.

Example 2 of the cover rules shows this.

Thanks milo

Note that this depends on what your getting cover from. If your standing or kneeling behind an appropriately sized wall or similar obstacle, you have cover against ranged attacks, but your opponents *don't* ( because the half-wall or upturned table isn't blocking *your* fire ).
