Optimizing ability scores with point buy

What are some of the best all-around ability score sets we can obtain in this game with the current point-buy/leveling system?

Looks like they made it really hard to break, so of course, that means we have to try to break it.

Who's up for some stress testing?

My only observation thus far: Having a 15 or 17 is useless. At level 5 the 17 becomes 18 whereas had it been a 16 to start with it would have still been an 18. 15 works the same.

Odd score really only seem good for feat prereqs, carrying capacity and avoiding ability score drain.

Liberty's Edge

If one is going for power armor, you can focus a lot on mental stats surprisingly or con because str doesn't matter and you hit max dex on AC ( though not for all the other dex based things).

For all around ability score boosts, I like using the odd boost from theme to hit 13 (or 11 and eventually 13) for feats.

Assuming you pick a race with +2 in two stats you like and -2 in a dump stat, 4 4 2 from point buy
16 16 13 10 10 8
or if you want a 3rd main stat but still another 13 for a feat later
16 16 12 11 10 8
at level 5
18 18 14 13 10 8

Why is starting with 18 on a stat considered bad? Isn't that the only way to get a natural 22 at 20th level?

I suppose that is the only way, but to pull it off, you need to completely give up 4 points to your other stats.

Odd scores being almost useless is frustrating. So many times when stating up a character I end up with a point remaining and never have any idea what to make odd without it being useless.

A 15 in an ability is a common prerequisite for many feat. If you are planning on taking one, it might be worth paying for a 14 and using your theme boost for the odd score.

You may want to get used to that, because with the way point buy works (and the modifiers of the races currently available), you will always end up with at least one odd score.

I'd suggest looking at feat prerequisites. Find something you like, maybe not to take right away, but that you might want at some point, that needs a 13 or 15 or whatever. Put your odd number towards that one.

It's best to ignore the stat boost at level 20, unless you know your game is going to play at level 20 (which is pretty rare.)

With that said, if you start at 18 it's fine since it's a 1-1 buy. But other stats do suffer, but then I think there's a strong argument for not putting any further points in your 18.

It's really push the 18 to 20 at level 10, then don't touch it again because any buy at 15 really won't do anything for you since it's an odd number.

Or stop at 18 and have to extra ability points at upgrade levels to boost other stats.

Over the course of a character's life even if you start at 18 and push a stat as hard as you can, you'll only get a +1 mod over someone that stops at 18 until level 20. And they'll have have a +1 mod somewhere else with more overall stats.
