Just curious what people think about these PF options that seemed popular. As the game finally gets out there do people think these will still be valid options for the new system or are they not needed?
I, personally, am on the fence with both.
With Background skills because lets face it, it always seems like you have too few skill points and Hero Points seem like Resolve may somewhat take this niche in many ways.
I am interested to hear others views on these.

I suspect background skills are no longer needed. There are only 20 skills, and everyone gets at least 4+int (Operatives get what counts as 10+int)
Heo points aren't things I've really used. You could potentially house rule hero points in as additional uses for resolve points though - mighht make them a bit to powerful; a resolve point is on the scale of a grit point, or Ki point.

My home game use hero points and if they were added to Starfinder I would definitely not want them linked to Resolve Points.
As you note Resolve is a refreshing pool of points, something you definitely would not want for Hero Points given their far greater potential power.

They significantly altered skills to the point where no, I don't believe Background Skills are a viable option in Starfinder, with the exception of maybe Profession.
They combined skills down to a lower number, and we don't have the same sort of skills that don't have real "usefulness" like Pathfinder does.
Appraise
Artistry
Craft
Handle Animal
Knowledge (engineering)
Knowledge (geography)
Knowledge (history)
Knowledge (nobility)
Linguistics
Lore
Perform
Profession
Sleight of Hand
Of these skills which were background skills, only profession and sleight of hand remain. Knowledge skills were condensed to be useful more useful. Linguistics was rolled into something else to be more useful. Lore and Artistry don't exist in Starfinder at this time. Appraise is no longer a skill (maybe was rolled into something else). Handle animal was rolled into survival.
It just wouldn't make sense anymore to have background skills.
Also, all classes have at least 4 skill points per level.

I don't yet have Starfinder, but I expect that I will use hero points in some form. d20's are swingy and it's useful to have some way of covering your butt in the worst cases.
The core rules have nothing like hero points. They do have Resolve Points, but those would be dangerous to use as hero points as they are a daily resource rather than a per level resource.
