Hungry Flesh monster and Reactive Regeneration

Rules Questions

Hey all,

Hope people can help me with this quick question.

With Hungry flesh (beast 4) it has reg 5 which I know can be stopped with acid & fire. However I'm unsure if the special abililty hungry flesh has would stop also?

Reactive Regeneration (Ex) Whenever a hungry flesh takes piercing or slashing damage, it regenerates 5 hit points and gains 1 growth point.

Would the above ability stop if a player used acid or fire attacks? Would this also stop the growth points also?

I was playing with it as it didn't stop it and the monster just kept growing and my players couldn't kill it and had to retreat.

Thanks in advance :)

It appears the two abilities are separate from each other. I see Regeneration 5 (acid or fire) is listed in Defense and Reactive Regeneration is its own ability which specifies that the creature regenerates 5 hit points whenever it takes slashing or piercing damage, which could occur multiple times a round. Regeneration is typically just once per round.

While I can thematically see the view for having it stop growing if its not regenerating... the descriptions don't really match its growth with its Regeneration. I mean... it's otherwise always constantly regenerating so it would probably be constantly growing (which it doesn't, it tends to shrink, rather quickly). Only when the Reactive Regeneration is triggered does it gain Growth points.

I would have to say that even using fire or acid to suppress its normal Regeneration, a party still should avoid trying to slash and pierce it, because each hit will heal it and enlarge it. Unless the author or writer had some inscrutable idea or concept that didn't get translated or survive final edit, I would say that the two are separate abilities; one is suppressed by a specific attack, the other is triggered by a specific attack.

Yep that was what happened. TBH I glad it happen that way because it stop my players go to an area I've not prep for.

It was mean to scare my level 1 players :P

Thank!

Now that they've retreated, the Hungry Flesh oozes away and a Rubbery Flesh moves in... it looks just like the other one but bludgeoning and fire make it grow and cold and attacks from wooden weapons suppress its Regeneration.

If the description uses the word "regenerates", I would assume fire or acid stop it. Otherwise, it should have simply said "heals".
