Do you go through checks to defeat, if you defeat a bane BYA?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The MM AD6 henchman Shendakut has the power:

"BYA, attempt a... check. If you succeed, Shendakut is defeat"

So, if I succeed and have already defeat the monster - should I *still* go through its Divine/Combat check to defeat?

My RAW intuition is that I should (nothing tells me to skip them after all), but it doesn't really make much sense.

MM rulebook p10: "If a power allows you to automatically defeat or acquire a card, you may use it instead of attempting the check. Doing so counts as succeeding at all checks and requirements to defeat or acquire the card."

The BYA power doesn't say automatically but I think this still applies. As such, you would not attempt any of the checks.

I think I'd skip them, personally. If I'd point to anything, it would be this, under Encounterin a Card:

You may not use such a power against any card that does not have a check to acquire or defeat, or any card that has a check you're not allowed to succeed at.

This seems to be what Shendakut is doing. And it makes it different than things that render banes undefeated (where we know from Vic that is basically flipping a switch to the undefeated state, but not effecting the sequence of the encounter). We are told here that if a power lets you automatically defeat a card, you use it instead of attempting the check. While Shendakut doesn't say "automatically" it is basically a power that lets you automatically defeat the card.

That's my opinion anyway.

EDIT: See, skizzerz and I are thinking the same way.

Thanks, guys, that makes sense.

I agree that if Shendakut's BYA used the word "automatically" - I wouldn't even think of asking the question.
