This is the first I've heard of it. As far as I know, it's a coincidence, though. The one who named Lorthact was Mike McArtor and he's no longer with us so we can't ask him where he got the name. It may be a coincidence, or it may be he took the name from the old Dragon article (I hope it was the former).

Holy crap, my fault guys.
I thought I deleted my OP before anyone could respond. I guess Jacobs posted within like, 90 seconds or so of my OP -- which did, in fact refer to the two-part article in Dragon 75-76.
I immediately deleted it because of course I knew the answer, it was either a random naming coincidence or just a nominal homage -- like Socothbenoth from the 1983 MM2. Also, there is the chance that I got it wrong. Years ago I started a comprehensive document with all the proper names of devils & demons in D&D history, starting with the old Dragon article and the Lesser Key of Solomon and everything else I could find. I color-coded the font to reflect the source (red for Dragonlance, green for Greyhawk, purple for Pathfinder, etc) and there's always a chance I made a typing error giving Lorthact the font for old D&D. I deleted the OP so I'd have time to read through my old Dragon 75 and confirm my document is accurate-- something I may do this weekend.
But apparently in the 90 seconds it took me to read over my OP and then go to delete the thread, Jacobs had already found it and replied.
