My current game the GM has allowed for the creation of spells, and has given me full reign on designing them. Long as they are similar in strength with the respective spell level of other spells.
I am playing as a Magus, and I am thinking of researching a fog spell since I need one for the current plot. However, the class Magus normally focuses on spells for combat.
Do you think it would be alright to design spells for the character that is technically out of the class's norm?

The Magus spell list has quite a few fog spells on it;
Obscuring Mist
Fog Cloud
Euphoric Tranquility
Stinking Cloud
Solid Fog
Cloudkill
Acid FogSo it's not out of character for the magus spell list to develop new foggy spells. In fact, do you really need different fog spells than these?
There were a few reasons why I had asked... I had just leveled up, so I am unable to grab new spells. I forgot that the magus had regular fog spells available when I looked through the spell list earlier.
Finally, this is for future spells as well. I just wanted to get peoples opinions when deciding to design spells. For instance, a wizard can learn Alarm but a Magus can't, but what is preventing a Magus from creating this spell?The difference from a Wizard to a Magus is what they focus in, but nothing from what I read says that they are magically different. From this understanding if a Magus has the need to research or create a specific spell for a situation, is there anything stopping him?

Each spell list has a sort of overarching theme. Except they're not always spelled out that explicitly, you sort of have to read it between the lines.
If you want to research a spell that's somewhat similar to spells already on your class list, that's a good sign. If it's doing something that's very clearly not on your spell list (i.e. regular cure spells for a wizard) that probably shouldn't work.
Since magi don't get "trap" spells at all, it'd be kinda sketchy to be able to research them. Apparently that's not how their particular blend of magic works. If you desperately wanted trap/alarm spells, you should multiclass as a wizard.
