Scarab Sages

My 10 year old daughter and I are playing Rise of the Runelords together. She uses Amiri, I use Lem. Due to Lem's power, we pretty much stay together. To date, we have been playing the game as "you flip it, you encounter it." In other words, even though we are at the same location, if Lem flips a monster, he has to be the one to fight it, and if Amiri flips a barrier, she has to defeat it. This has worked for us for the most part, though Lem encountering Nualia twice did result in his death.

Now, I am wondering if we are doing things wrong. In the Strategy #10 blog post, the following advice is provided:

Quote:
Villains are the cards most likely to require multiple checks to defeat. Although some characters, such as Valeros and Seoni, can easily draw hands that can create two stunning attacks in a row, it's harder for other characters, like Sajan and Lini. As a result, it's often best to face villains with two characters, letting one take on each roll.

To me, that quote indicates that we have been approaching things wrong, and that (just like in the rpg), encounters can be handled by the group.

So, if the two characters are at the same location, and Lem encounters a monster, is Amiri allowed to bash it for him?

Amiri can only bash a monster for Lem if that monster requires MULTIPLE checks to defeat (with a THEN in between them). This rule is in the rulebook, but I don't have access to it at the moment to give you a page number reference.

So, if Lem flips a monster that just says "Combat 12" in its checks to defeat, only Lem may fight it. If he flips a monster that says "Combat 12 THEN Combat 14", Amiri can take one of those two combat checks for him.

The Mummy's Mask rulebook is the current rules, but I'm including the RotR version in case that is the one you have a physical copy of.

Only the character who encounters the card may attempt the check, save for one exception: if a card requires sequential checks, the character who encountered the card must attempt at least one of the checks, but any other checks may each be attempted by any character at the encountering character’s location. While you are attempting a check against such a card that you did not encounter, powers that would apply to the character who encountered it apply to you instead.

So, if Lem and Amiri are at the same location and Lem encounters Black Fang Lem has to be the one to attempt the Combat 12 check to defeat. But if Lem encounters The Sand Point Devil instead, Lem has to attempt either the first or second Combat 20 check to defeat and Amiri can attempt the other one.
