Starfinder Character Creation at GenCon 50

General Discussion

Hi,

I sent an e-mail, but never got a response so I'm hoping to get some friendly advice here on the forum. A friend of mine and I have purchased tickets to the Starfinder game on Sunday [Fugitive on the Red Planet] and it appears we are required to bring materials to the game, which I presume to be dice and a character sheet. I was hoping to find a seminar or class at GenCon to assist in character creation, but the only one I saw was on Friday at 10am, which clashed with another event I'd signed up for.

Any suggestions on how to create a character prior to GenCon? I play a lot of Pathfinder, so I'm familiar with those rules at least, but after poking around a bit on this website I haven't seen any free pdfs or the like that could assist me in creating characters for Starfinder prior to the game. Will there be open opportunities at GenCon to get involved in learning about character creation prior to the actual game on Sunday or is character creation done at the game itself? My schedule is pretty full up for the convention, so I'd probably just have to find a spare hour somewhere to wander by and sit down, if you do have something like that.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, and I'm really looking forward to August!

There will be pregens available, but they assumed that if you wanted to play your own character you'd be able to purchase the book Thursday and by Friday have created a character, which is why all the games offered Thursday are pregen only. If your game isn't until Sunday, you'll have several days to make a character.

Does anyone know if there plans for a free pdf on character creation? Thanks in advance!

A lot depends on how clear the character creation outline in the core rulebook is. I assume that Paizo thinks that outline will be clear enough that no supplement will be needed to create a character quickly.

The biggest change seems to be the Point Buy math and then pick Species, Theme and Class... Maybe a feat too.

So 7 species, 7 themes and 7 classes, thats only 343 possible combination to work through, right? Shouldnt take too long.

Aha! Sounds good, I'll plan to purchase the book on Thursday then. Good God it's probably going to be a mad rush to buy them at Gen Con.

If you pre-order you should be able to pick up your book at the Con, i expect they will sell out of their regular stock but you may have luck with a walk up sale.

I'm really hoping they announce subscription info and GenCon pickup details soon.

13 species, 10 themes (counting themeless), 7 classes, 3 archetypes (counting not having an archetype). If you assume someone can only take 1 archetype and 1 theme, that's 2,730.

And that's if you're using just the core rulebook. First Contact will have a few races too. Then it looks like most classes have a sort of "sub-class". I'm actually horribly hyped about how many possible combinations there are.

Fine, so it might take a day or two for it all to get sorted out, their game isnt until Sunday, there is time :P

That's assuming that all the species will be SFS legal though, which at the moment we have no word about as far as I know. Still exciting, but I'm only expecting the core 7 to be legal right off the bat.

And you don't have to consider every possible combination before picking one.

Yeah, to be fair, I still think it'll be pretty easy.

Steve,

I'll be running demos for Paizo all weekend in the space they've set up adjacent to/in/by their booth. If you stop by the demo area, and I'm not running a demo, I'd be glad to help with character creation questions. I assume I'll have enough knowledge by then to help out. I'm not sure yet how they're structuring the demos, but even if I can't help you there, my shifts all end at around 6 when the vendor area closes, and I don't have any games lined up before 8 on Thursday or Saturday, so we might be able to arrange to meet somewhere and I could help you out.

That's how my schedule looks as well, so if Nefreet is busy I can do my best to fill in (either taking his table so he can help you or helping you in his stead :-P)

You might also check at the HeroLabs booth. They normally allow people to try their software out creating characters. I don't know if they will have it ready for Starfinder at the release, but it may be worth checking on.

I see from their newsletter that they have an event listed: Starfinder -- The Digital Tools Horizon.
