Age of the Gods

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

So curiosity/got to thinking, how much do we know about the ages of different gods, who's oldest and who's youngest?

And of the ones we don't know for sure, where do we place them?

Pharasma seems a shoe-in for the oldest of the old, with Asmodeus pretty far up there.

Flipside, Iomedae and Milani, the youngest of the young? Or is there anyone younger still?

Let's try and make a deific age list

I would say nocticula is probably next after those, with current negative age but not by much

As for the oldest, some followers of Asmodeus claim that he was one of the first two deities, along with his brother Ihys (whom he later killed). On the other hand, dragons claim that first deities were Apsu and Tiamat, and Dahak is their first-born. Groetus is also very old, even qlippoths and proteans have no record of time when he didn't exist. And while not the first god, Rovagug might have existed as a powerful qlippoth even before divines appeared. Pharasma is at least as old as the mortal races, but there could have been a lot of time between the appearance of gods and the creation of the Material Plane. Zyphus wouldn't be much younger.

By the time Rovagug was imprisoned, many gods already existed:

Gods and Magic, p. 1 wrote:

Out of the core deities not appearing on this list, probably only Shelyn was already present at that time, as she is known as the sister of Zon-Kuthon/Dou-Bral, who appears on the list above. Lamashtu probably became a god not long after that; her killing of Curchanus is refered to as the first instance the gods realized they can be killed by someone not of their kind.

Urgathoa was the first undead, and undead were already known in the Ancient Thassilon, so she is probably the first mortal to ever achieve divinity.

Gorum appeared during the Age of Darkness, during the first battles between humans and orcs.

Nethys is said to establish the kingdom of Ancient Osirion and establish Azghaad as the first pharaoh before achieving divinity. That was ca. -3470 AR.

It is said that existence of Besmara as a deity predates the Age of Enthronement by few centuries, and as a water spirit before that by millenia.

Aroden become a god in 1 AR, obviously.

Norgorber was the first to succed at the Test of the Starstone, in 1893 AR.

The date when Irori become a god is unknown, but first missionaries of Irori appeared in Tian Xia in 2187 AR, so it definitely was before that date.

Cayden Cailean became a god in 2765 AR. He is mentioned as the god who (together with Desna) later elevated Kurgess to divinity, so Kurgess is younger than him.

Iomedae in 3832 AR.

Milani only after the death of Aroden in 4606 AR, so she's most likely the youngest.

Considering Groetus is linked with the Boneyard and thus Pharasma, I wonder if he came in with her. And note, Pharasma handles the death of everything, including gods and outsiders, so unlike some tied to concepts related to mortals or the material plane, she's waaaay old. Plus she claims to have arrived from outside, so possibly literally older than the multiverse.

I'll toss in the Osirion gods. Most are pretty vague on where, but Ptah and Apep have very ancient-sounding origins. Apep comes from the 'primal chaos before creation,' which sounds a lot like the Maelstrom before the other planes. Ptah has 'created himself and the universe.' Which.. is fairly likely just the beliefs of the Osirions, but still, even if it's just referring to making the material, that's pretty old, or if it refers to him being involved in making other planes from the maelstrom, *really* old.

Also, Ra created most other Osirion gods and is considered 'old' by the time he made some of them like Sekhmet. Considering all the Osirion pantheon was around by the time of ancient Osirion (obviously), that pegs him as pretty old.

depending on who you ask Apsu might have been primordial order before he took on his dragon form, and therefore the first deity.

Though there is some theory that Rovagug might have existed from a universe before and the reasons for his rampages are this universe hurts him and he wants to destroy it all so he can finally die. Of course this theory might cover some of the Old Gods too...

Yea, though more recent information has more leaned to him being an ascended Qlippoth. Now the Qlippoth themselves are one of the very oldest and could've existed before the Abyss met the Maelstrom, though of course he wouldn't become a God til later.

I don't have anything to add, but nice work on all that research!

Technically these aren't mutually exclusive

I'm pretty sure Cayden Cailean is over 21.

Almost 2000 years old, looks 30, thinks he's 20, and behaves like he's 5.
