Can a unchained Summoner use the regular summoner's archetypes?

Synthesist in particular

Sure, as long as the archetype does not include new base forms or any other feature that is clearly incompatible with the Unchained Summoner.

Although I think PFS may have a different take on this subject (not that it matters here since they already banned the Synthesist archetype before Pathfinder Unchained came out).

As long as all the same class abilities are there to be replaced, I think you're good to go.

From the introduction to the class section in Unchained " Finally, with the exception of the monk, these classes should work with any of the archetypes from previous books as long as the classes still have the appropriate class features to replace."

Sounds like you're set.

For PFS, there's this handy "blog" entry which explains which regular summoner archetypes are legal for the unchained summoner.

For non-PFS, like everything, ask the GM. It should be legal, but especially the synthesist is important to ask about, since that is the archetype which seems to have the most complaints directed against it.

But for the Synthesist, the real argument seems to be whether to allow it at all rather than whether it can be combined with the Unchained Summoner. That archetype combines equally well with either type of Summoner as its "chassis".

Yeah my DM says no on the synthesis despite this being a non PFS game. :( fear of it being to strong.

Which is a fair point, given most people I hear about here on the boards making huge, pouncing, cookie-cutter death machines. Ruins it for the people that want less fun-ruining games.

At least with the Unchained summoner, you have to wait until level 7 and spend 3 evolution points (half the available points in the pool at that level) to get pounce; instead of being able to get it at level 1 for 1 evolution point with the APG version.
