Astomoi and Countless Eyes.

Rules Questions

So my GM is running a one-shot. Third party and all sorts of silliness. A couple of house rules, feat taxes. It was pretty cool. I scribbled up an Astomoi Wizard, Shadowcaster archetype. Which was fine. GM ruled Astomoi were 13RP. Limit was 15. So he's fine with it.

When I got to my third level spells. I took my Specialization of Major Image, and the extra spell slot I had after going back to my 2nd level for another, was used on Countless eyes. We had a long outstanding argument ending in the GM ruling I could use it.. But his point had some validity.

Countless Eyes, the spell. Says you gain "Extra eyes." Which is the part that concerned the GM, and even another player (Of the six in our party, including the GM) agreed, the lack of eyes would make the spell itself unusable for my race.

The reason I selected the spell, is to break the 60 foot vision barrier on the Astomoi. Not so much game breaking as, giving my character ACTUAL vision for enemies beyond the 60 foot range limit of my normal vision.

While I am happy the spell will be usable for the campaign, I feel I should ask the community to see what they think about the particular combination.

The question boils down to this; Should the "Countless Eyes" spell function for a race like the Astomoi who have no eyes?

Liberty's Edge

The spell don't give you any form of sight, It only enhance what you already have giving you all around vision.
As I see it, you get 360° perception, but you are still limited to your normal perception range.

This only lasts minutes per level but it could be made into a magic item...same cost as darkvision goggles.

Just need a familiar.

But it could be the basis for the creation of a spell common to there race. Hours per level to grow eyes. I would make it regular vision with only 180 degree. Or allow it to progress at higher levels to 360.

Also I am a fan of giVing them Thoughsense (Ex) Monster Power http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/universal-monster-rules /

As a feat requiring something that shows the character focuses in expanding his senses. (Maybe 5 ranks in Perception and another feat that add to senses maybe Psychic Seneseitvity )

Liberty's Edge

In a home game I will work with the GM to craft a custom version of Countless Eyes made for Astomoi. Gaining a new sense isn't easy to manage, especially when it is something as powerful and complex as human vision.
Gaining the ability to see colors (darkvision is black and withe), to see outside your normal range and so on will require "some" adaption.

Thoughsense is very powerful, as it is a form of blindsight. For an NPC it can be appropriate, for PCs, it should be very costly in terms of feats or prerequisites.
