Improved Two Weapon Fighting + Thrown Weapons

Rules Questions

So there's an argument I'm having with other DM's concerning Improved Two Weapon Fighting.

Quote:
Benefit: In addition to the standard single extra attack you get with an off-hand weapon, you get a second attack with it, albeit at a –5 penalty.

They're focusing on the word "it" here. So they're saying that when you have two weapons in your hands, the second iterative attack MUST be used with the same weapon.

Example I have of a scenario.

> Start attack.
> Choose to do two weapon fighting with two daggers.
> Throw main hand weapon, throw off hand weapon.
> Quick draw two new daggers.
> Can throw with the new main hand weapon, but can't throw with the second dagger.

Thoughts? I say that if you can draw a second dagger, you can throw that dagger since you have a second iterative attack.

They also say that if you have a blinkback belt or something, or something that can bring the same dagger thrown back into your off-hand, you can use the second iterative attack with that dagger.

I don't have the rules source backing it up, but I know you can TWF with thrown weapons because of Alchemist Nova builds that use twf and fast bombs to throw lots of bombs, which obviously aren't the same weapon since they are destroyed on use.

So, here's the FAQ on Two-Weapon Fighting and when you are considered to be using TWF. It fairly clearly outlines when you can make off-hand attacks, and when declaring where your primary attacks takes effect. Essentially, the only thing you commit to when you TWF is that you take penalties to make an extra attack with a second weapon, and not just using the same weapons to complete these attacks. So you should be allowed to make a full attack with your thrown weapons, even if they were not the weapons you started with at the beginning of the full attack. With your DM's line of logic, you essentially cannot even continue making a full attack action if it isn't with the same weapon with which you began the action.

The main problem is that in improved two weapon fighting specifically says you can make them with it.

So the belief they have is that when you choose to do two weapon fighting, you can quick draw a second weapon for the iterative attack, but must use it for the second iteration.

It's because those rules which you posted stated you are "locked in" to using the same weapon for primary first and iterative, and the mace for the iterative.

Quote:

Using the longsword/mace example, if you use two-weapon fighting you actually have fewer options than if you aren't. Your options are (ignoring the primary/off hand penalties):

(A') primary longsword at +6, primary longsword at +1, off hand mace at +6
(B') primary mace at +6, primary mace at +1, off hand longsword at +6
In other words, once you decide you're using two-weapon fighting to get that extra attack on your turn (which you have to decide before you take any attacks on your turn), that decision locks you in to the format of "my primary weapon gets my main attack and my iterative attack, and my off hand weapon only gets the extra attack, and I apply two-weapon fighting penalties."

I believe it is b$&~$$~s, and only finds a bit of logic to complicate the game more, but still.

Alchemist: If an alchemist has the Fast bombs discovery, can he use Rapid Shot, Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, haste, and similar abilities and effects to add more attacks?

As written, yes, all of these apply because fast bombs "functions just like a full-attack with a ranged weapon."

If an alchemist can make use of these feats with weapons he creates in the moment that explode when used, I think you're fine using daggers.

Scarab Sages

Just get ricochet toss, your off hand dagger returns to you immediately after your attack. You're using the same weapon, pedantic ruling appeased.
