Some construct descriptions state "this does not stop the rest of the soul from moving on, or being reincarnated." Several people working on similar projects would be able to create numerous fragments of a single soul, to be housed in several soul foci/gems. What would be the limit of fragments? Sentient constructs would require much more of the soul, but I can only find stuff that implies it's not even half of the soul (assuming it's a core race).
What factor would determine the "value" of a soul? Is it static, based on species type? Or fluid, based on strength of character, mind, or will? If I had to house-rule it, I'd say the maximum amount of soul fragments is one fifth of the mental stats combined, rounded to nearest whole number.
5 for fully-sentient construct
3 for partially-sentient construct*
1 for completely submissive construct
* If attached to the same construct, they work together. E.g:
As a backstory, 'Karran Masu' is a low-born drow in love with a noble drow, Elosa Kenoet, and successfully courts her. His punishment is servitude for as long as there is an heir or master of that family, of which she is disowned. Karran's mental stats are: 14 INT, 12 WIS, 16 CHA. His soul is split into 4 (two partially-sentient Soulbound Mannequins (as a S.B. Shell is fully-sentient), and two S.B. Dolls).
Both mannequins' souls are placed in the torso, but Elosa manages to convert one into a mask, which she then places on the other mannequin's head. Together, they manage to capture the S.B. Dolls. After much trouble, they manage to embed the doll soul gems into Karran's head, effectively making them eyes. As a construct, Kerran now has 8 soul fragments connected to one form, or he can lend Elosa his mask. Finally, as the mask itself has three soul fragments, it can be placed on a secondary mannequin, giving it a semblance of life. The backstory presented is for Elosa as a PC, and Kerran either as another PC, or as a follower.

It's mostly a GM-decided issue, for lack of written rules or suggestions. Though I guess souls "heal" over time and so could spawn an infinite amount of soul fragments. I think "a year and a day" is a nice, vaguely mystical length of time for a soul to be fully restored and ready for another slice to be removed.
Unless souls scar. I think they might.

that makes excellent sense. i think i'll use the metric i described above for my own campaign, but i see your reference to rule 0a: when in doubt, ask the GM.
