Name of the solar system

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I'm setting a bunch of stuff up in realmworks and have come to the realization that I don't know what Golarion's Solar system is called.

Does anyone have a reference I can't find in Distant Worlds?

dont think there is one.

golarion could be in Andromeda for all we know......

according to the map in distant worlds it's official name is "The Solar System" and golarion is the 3rd planet out from the "Sun" - I wonder where they got such a weird idea from?! Almost as if they've got some weird place to draw inspiration from!

Right but Earth exists, RoW takes you there. So it's not "Sol".

On a side note it looks like quantum mechanics isn't a thing in PF - Molecules can stop vibrating (pg 50 of distant worlds) - don't think they can in our reality
Also Lashunta, Triaxans, Kalo, Shobhads, Vercites, Ysoki Rat-men are all from the same Solar System (androids kinda are - they're mostly from Numeria - possibly made there) - Only Formians and Kasatha are from outside it

Spoiler:
The ship crashed from Androffa

I didn't say it was our solar system of their representation of it - just that that's it's name by the book

Solar systems don't really have names. The one we live in is "the" or "our" solar system. It's not called Bob or Eric or BH5514D. I guess other systems are named after their star. Golarion's star is called..."the sun" according to DW. So we're not getting very far.

Since the people of Golarion call the star of their system "The Sun," those few individuals versed in astronomy would likely call their system, "Golarion's solar system" or just "the solar system." That's what it's called in Distant Worlds.

If distinguishing Golarion's system from other star systems becomes relevant, I'd recommend using the same terminology for the system that they will use in Starfinder... at least as soon as it's published later this summer.

"Sol" is just "Sun" in an old language anyway.

Honestly the odd thing is that there's a name for "Golarion" that isn't just some variation on "Dirt".

It just says that Golarian was named by outsiders.

I always assumed that the word "Golarion" was Taldane for "The World."

I've kind of wondered if it's actually something like Azlanti for "The Cage". Named to them by the Gods and passed down.

It's more likely a Cyclopean or Aklo word in origin. Some language where you'd need four syllables to mean something that basic.

Well, I mean, isn't it called the "Gol"

Hm, just looked it up while starting to type this, and I can't find any hint of that.

Weird that I thought it was called "Gol" somewhere.

That said, "Gol" could very easily be the vague equivalent of "jail" or "cage" while "arion" could be "earth" or "world" or "planet" or "dirt" or whatever. Or the reverse. Heck the "ion" may well just be a linguistic tick (or rough equivalent; the way we sometimes entirely rewrite words when describing them in different contexts), leaving "Gol" and "ar<something>" the linguistic root elements that describe it, to make it a pretty banal and straightforward name.

Or "Golarion" could be the aboleth language, for, "Lolwutlozers, watch this!" so...

XD

"Gol" actually shows up somewhere intriguing, in the name of the ancient Cyclopean empire Ghol-Gan. The etymology of that state's name is frustratingly out of reach, as it most of its history. What is known is that they worshiped the sun and moon. The sun in those days was personified by Sarenrae, as it is now, but the moon was personified by Acavna.

From Wikipedia:

A planetary system is a set of gravitationally bound non-stellar objects in orbit around a star or star system. Generally speaking, systems with one or more planets constitute a planetary system, although such systems may also consist of bodies such as dwarf planets, asteroids, natural satellites, meteoroids, comets, planetesimals[1][2] and circumstellar disks. The Sun together with its planetary system, which includes Earth, is known as the Solar System.[3][4] The term exoplanetary system is sometimes used in reference to other planetary systems.

So another star system would be for example the Alpha Centari system. Any star with planets around it would be a planetary system likewise named after its star.

As said above Sol is another name for the Sun. Which are both names for our star. Hence forth the Solar System. So there is only one Sun and by extention only one Solar System. Obviously there are many Stars and many Systems.

At least that is my understanding of it.

You are correct. Other "solar systems" with planets orbiting a star are called planetary systems, not solar systems.

Thanks. What I was getting at is there is only one Solar System. So saying what Solar System is that is like saying what Earth is that when looking at Jupiter.

and we call our solar system the Milkyway......

we can call the golarion system the Snickers System
