I was very excited to see this AP, and even signed up for the Adventure Path specifically for this series. Everything I read about it had me drooling for the adventure.. but now that I have read book 1, I am a little concerned. I have never been a strong enough GM (or maybe just never had the right experience) to do well with freeform sandbox games. Although I can deal with the occasional wayward party, I like more structure to the adventure than this seems to provide. In addition, I have no face to face group.. all of my roleplaying is done on the Paizo forums via PbP.
With this in mind, I am having difficulty seeing how I could get this game up and running. I have never dealt with some of the concepts that are central to the first book (Militia and army rules mostly), and can see this easily bogging down into either a very slow running low action PbP as they bob about the woods taking care of the refugees, or an incredible amount of behind the scenes spreadsheet management for me.. something that I am not entirely enthused about. The third option would be almost completely prewriting the first book to give myself the structure and a more linear path than what is provided. Honestly, I don't have the time to balance RL and the second two options.
What are your thoughts and opinions? Any suggestions for where to look for additional help or different points of view?

My books aren't quite across the pacific yet, so I haven't read it. However, is it possible to outsource the spreadsheet management to a player (or subset of the players) who like that kind of thing?
Maybe you can run the "normal" adventuring in the gameplay thread and use the discussion thread for the meta-stuff covering militias, armies, commanders...
