If I charge from horseback with a lance and confirm a critical hit, how much damage do I do: x5? or x6?

X4

x5 with spirited charge

Multiplying: When you are asked to apply more than one multiplier to a roll, the multipliers are not multiplied by one another. Instead, you combine them into a single multiplier, with each extra multiple adding 1 less than its value to the first multiple. For example, if you are asked to apply a ×2 multiplier twice, the result would be ×3, not ×4.

The easiest way to understand this rule is to look at crits and other multipliers not as multiplying but as adding increments. So a lance crit is +2 damage rolls, and a lance charge is +1 damage roll, or +2 w spirited charge. This leads to +3 damage rolls on the crit, which is X4, or +4 or X5 w spirited charge.

I think I get it. The working is a little confusing since the exact words read "deals double damage" on charge instead of saying x2.

crit multiplies are not themselves multiplied. when charging it does double damage dice, or adds +1 damage dice. A crit is x3 damage, or +2 damage dice. Both of those combined are +3 total damage dice or a x4 crit multiplier. You add the bonus damage dice when multiples are used.
