Deity's Favored Weapon

Rules Questions

If the favored weapon of a deity is a weapon that has both martial and exotic proficiency aspects (e.g. katana, bastard sword) does a cleric of that deity get proficiency in both the martial and exotic aspects?

Short answer? Yes, for all practical purposes.

In all examples that I can think of, the martial proficiency of an exotic weapon is something of an inferior option, typically requiring two hands. There's nothing stopping you from using it with two hands even if you know how to use it with one. Even if you technically aren't proficient with it as a martial weapon, you can replicate its use exactly.

Regardless, in a RAI case, the answer is yes.

From the CRB faq "Cleric: Does a cleric, whose deity's favored weapon is the bastard sword, receive free martial or exotic weapon proficiency with the sword?
Since the bastard sword is listed as an exotic weapon, he receives the Exotic Weapon proficiency with the weapon, allowing him to use it one-handed."

You'd just get the one proficency. So for bastard sword, you'd be able to use it as a one-handed exotic weapon, but it wouldn't confer the ability to treat is a two handed martial weapon (could still wield it in two hands, as per one-handed weapon rules, but it would remain a one handed exotic weapon. Could also take an oversized verison, which would be two handed for you.).

And for the record, you can't actaully take martial weapon profiency (Bastard Sword), as it doesn't exist. A character with training in "all martial weapons" can treat the bastard sword as a two-handed martial weapon, but it isn't something that is trainable as a martial weapon.

Murdock, is there any difference mechanically from wielding a bastard sword two handed with or without the exotic proficiency?

You are fully proficient in all uses of a diety's favored weapon. It's like being fully proficient in longsword, you can use the bastard sword in one or two hands as you desire.

No there isn't. Being fully proficient does allow you to take feats such as weapon focus and weapon specialisation which apply with either way of using it, but can't be taken if you are not proficient with the weapon.

Probably minor, but it should matter to classes that require one-handed weapons, or those that require two handed weapons, as I believe the weapon is consider a two handed weapon when used without the exotic training, but with training in all martial weapons.

It also matters as a feat prerequisite, as feats like Weapon Focus, require proficency (which doesn't cover the martial use of bastard swords, as far as I know).
