Art and NPC Questions (Anniversary Edition: Player Guide, and updates from 3.5) [spoilers]

Rise of the Runelords

So... who are the people in the Anniversary Edition's PG?

I'm a GM, and I have the old 3.5 version, so I recognize the (very changed!) Lyrie, but I'm really not sure about the other three.

I've found some of the updated art, and generally we've used that instead, and some of them are so different as to be almost entirely unrecognizable; so if these are characters mentioned somewhere else in the AP, it'd be nice to show off the pictures and go, "Oh, yeah, this is this person."

Also, and this is a weird question, but is there any organized list of, say, all the NPCs in Rise of the Runelords, so that I could kind of keep them all straight? Thanks in advance!

Similarly, is there a collated list of changes between the editions with brief descriptions? For example, I've heard that there's the edition of "an encounter" with Lonjiku at the beginning, but I know nothing else about it, really. I don't need a full thing with that, but something like, "In it, he gets angry at PCs for hitting on Ameiko." or something would be nice, if possible.

Thanks!

In the AE Player's Guide: p. 9 - Lyrie, p. 10 - Vale Temros, p. 13 - Warrior of Wrath, p. 14 - Kaven Windstrike

I'm not aware of any list of all NPC's maybe in the Community Created thread. Ditto on the list of changes between the editions.

Are you playing 3.5 or PF? If you're playing PF, I'd recommend the Anniversary edition. Of course I'm spending someone else's money.

Playing PF, but running 3.5 - I don't have that money to "upgrade" that way, I'm afraid.

Hmm. I don't remember any Vale Temros woman? Kaven Windstriker... huh! That's, uh... that's definitely not how I thought of a Black Feather Ranger.

Huh. Didn't know wrath folk wielded axes. Okay, cool. Thanks!

EDIT: Wait! Duh! Now I remember Vale, and wow does Vale look all kinds of different! ... huh.

EDIT 2: Well now I feel kind of dumb. But I'm leaving that there, anyway.

I somehow misread where the page numbers are and what you were identifying for Vale and just assumed the last one was the only one I hadn't yet identified, without double-checking your mentioned page numbers.

p. 9 - Lyrie
p. 10 - Vale Temros
p. 13 - Warrior of Wrath
p. 14 - Kaven Windstrike

That... makes a lot more sense. I still am surprised by Kaven, but it does mesh with his description, after-the-fact. Thanks, again!

As far as changes I know of, Longjiku is introduced early, as being a dick to Ameiko about her whole owning a rowdy inn and being a former adventurer and all. I believe he just yells at her, she throws some stew at him and that is that.

Aldern is introduced in the initial goblin fight as needing rescue, and then later takes them on a boar hunt, where he starts developing his... obsession.

Xanesha is seriously toned down in the AE edition, with rogue levels instead of sorcerer.

Ah! Thanks! That is... really insightful!

Aldern sounds basically the same.

I might add rogue levels to the sorcerer-levels-Xanesha...

>:D

(Yes, I'm aware of how many games sorc-Xan ends...)

Out of curiosity, do you prefer books or PDFs.

I usually use PDFs - it makes it much more convenient to run search functions, and I can keep it organized.

That said, I prefer physical books - it's a thing that I tend to enjoy a lot. ... that said, I probably shouldn't be buying more physical books (though that's not exactly stopping me; at least not long-term). In addition to financial stuff, I... I kind of have too many*.

>.<

You?

* "What'ya'mean we don't have enough room on all seven-or-eight-I'm-not-actually-sure-if-that-one-counts bookshelves?! I can totally slide things into the space above the front row of books - you know, the one that's covering the back two rows? Oh, actually, nevermind, I can't - there's stuff there. Well what about on the floor in front of the bookshelves? That works! Also we can't ever have company, no reason."

Xanesha and Lucrectia basically have their classes swapped (X is now a rogue and L a sorcerer.) I switched them back when I ran the AP (because my players wanted a real challenge) and other than getting them to waste their alpha strike on a illusion, X didn't give them too much trouble (though she did manage to fly away invisible and escape.)

I would highly recommend using Ameiko's revised art rather than the "unqiue" art in the original AP.

There is a listing of all the Sandpoint NPCs with pictures in the Community Content thread, though since all the NPCs aren't actually pictured in the AP, the creator pulled together art they felt was appropriate though doesn't necessarily match the descriptions and/or people's mental images of the NPCs.

The Lonjiku encounter goes as follows:

Spoiler:
he comes into the Rusty Dragon looking for her, shouting in Minkai. When he doesn't see her (she's in the kitchen) he spots the PCs and starts berating them for sticking their noses where they don't belong. This brings Ameiko out. They argue in Minkai (with Ameiko swearing like a sailor) before Lonjinku tries to grab her by the hair. She twists free and clobbers him with her soup ladle. Embarrassed and angry, he leaves, stopping at the door just long enough to tell Ameiko (in Common) that she is as dead to him as her mother.

Oh! Thanks a lot! Do you have a link to the Community Content thread?

I'm... not sure where, exactly, to run a Search for that.

Oh! As an aside, I've so far been showing both older art and newer art, and, yes, the newer art changed responses to the people considerably...

Jubrayl is firmly established as a jerk, but it actually could have gone differently, had I used the new picture, first, and we had plenty of new images of Ameiko to reference (as we'd been interested at one point in running Jade Regent), so the old one was... weird, to say the least. :)

You can't miss the Community Created Stuff thread - it's one of the stickies at the top of the RotRL forum, along with the GM threads for each book in the AP. It only has 1300 posts, shouldn't take long for you to read through that :)

Keep in mind, just like the GM threads, it goes back to the original 3.5 version and the version changes over somewhere in the middle. Oh, and some of the old links to contributor content no longer work.

EDIT: uh, nevermind, don't know what happened, here. >.>
