With the compression ability, your mount doesn't squeeze until you get to even smaller spaces but if you don't have that ability yourself, you still occupy more space than is available and are squeezing.

This is incorrect.
If your mount takes up less space then so do you. You take up your mounts space, no more, no less.
If you are medium sized and riding a medium sized mount (possible within the rules) then you are occupying a medium sized space.

Your mount still takes up the same amount of space. It just isn't squeezing as compression alters when you are squeezing or not. You also never take up more space than your mount as you share the space your mount occupies.
