Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The location Warehouse in MM has the following 'when permanently closed' text:

Warehouse wrote:
On closing, summon and acquire a weapon, an armor or an item from the box.

If this was a 'when closing' text, it would make sense, but as 'when permanently closed'? It sounds like a condition, that you must acquire the summoned card. But what for? The location is already closed at that point.

Or if it's supposed to mean that you automatically acquire the card after summoning, then shouldn't the location just say to 'draw a random weapon, armor or item from the box'? Or is there some sneaky reason to word it in such an unusual way?

By RAW, I'm pretty sure the intention is that you automatically acquire the card. You don't summon and encounter it, you summon and acquire it.

There is a slight difference between drawing a card and summoning and acquiring a card however, as certain cards may care about whether you draw / summon / acquire. This distinction is the key here, I think.

Yeah, I figured there could be something like 'during this scenario, all summoned cards have difficulty of their checks increased by 3' or something like that.

On the other hand, it seems confusing that in one case 'summon and acquire' means having to do the check to acquire, while in another the acquisition is automatic.

Nope. Summon and acquire means summon and ATTEMPT to acquire. Otherwise it'd be Summon and Draw. The reward for closing is a chance to get a weapon, armor, or item, not a guarantee.

Now that you mention it, I'm unsure about what I wrote.

The point is that if they wrote 'Summon and encounter a random boon of type X', then no matter the result of your check, you will have to banish the card afterwards, by the rules on summoning.
So they certainly want you to be able to get what you summon by using this wording - however, I'm now unsure if you have to satisfy the acquire condition on the card in order to keep it.

Going by my RAW interpretation, I guess the difference can be explained since 'When closing' is a condition:
IF the When closing effect 'is true/ happens', then the location is (temporarily) closed.

'Permanently closed' is an order to take an action, however.

So the difference is 'did you acquire the card' and 'do acquire the card!'.

I wouldn't be surprised if skizzers or someone else drops by and proves me wrong though, so lets just wait for someone with a better rules knowledge.

EDIT:
Ninja'd by James. I guess that explanation is simpler and makes more sense.
