Pit situation

Advice

A sorcerer cast 'create pit' (10ftx10ft pit) under a monster taking up 10ft space. The monster made its reflex save to jump away. Another character standing by the pit, however, fell in and is prone but not helpless.

As the monster takes up 10ft of space, can it actually enter the pit as one of the squares is occupied? I suppose it could climb the walls around the pit to get across, but is it possible for it to climb into and out of the pit in this situation?

no they cant occupy the same square the pit is in also if the pit was summoned right under the monster how did your ally fall in?

well at least not without risking falling in

The ally was adjacent to the pit, fighting the monster. Falling in shouldn't be a problem, the monster wants to actually climb into the pit and then out at the other side (there is some difficulty in getting around it).

ally shouldn't have fallen in unless they were being reckless or rolled a nat 1 on something. as for the creature i would say that they need to make a climb check to go down then over to one side then continue on to the opposite side. or make like a dc 10(20 if no running start) acrobatics check to jump a 10 foot gap

I guess the character fell in when they ended their turn on a square adjacent to the pit and failed their reflex save. Might have been interesting if both the character and the monster failed their saves :-).

The monster could possibly use the squeeze rules to move through the pit past the prone character. It can squeeze past a creature while moving, but can't end it's movement in an occupied square. This movement should provoke an attack of opportunity also.

Thanks. We just decided, before seeing the replies, between us that the monster could squeeze into the pit. Seems that was wrong, but oh well, it's done now. Incidentally, another character has jumped into the pit in an attempt at landing on the monster, sword point first. We've really made a mess here...

We misremembered about the Create Pit spell. We thought people adjacent to the pit could fall in immediately on creation, and not after.
