So looking at the rules for making a Staff for my Arcanist, what I am not understanding is how it works if I want it to be both weapon and Magic Staff

Those are two separate areas of enchantment.

You either are using the rules for craft arms and armor OR you are using the Craft Staff. Combining the two would be a custom enchantment, which is up to your GM.

Not that several staves ARE weapons as well. ..e.g. Staff of Power and a few lesser staves.

You use Craft Staff to put staff (spell) abilities on it. Craft Weapons and Armor is used to put weapon enchantments on it.

I guess but am not sure that the two enchantments don't interact for any caps on gp value. E.g. at max level you could (maybe) have a +10 equivalent staff weapon, but also put some staff spells (with charges) on as part of a separate gp budget.


I figured both feats, I'm trying to figure out costs...

I have this idea for character to be working on a single staff slowly building it up...

First you'd need to figure out if your GM would allow it. If the GM were me, it'd be a very hard sell.


I have priced out a number of staffs from the books. Many staves are custom priced, as they do things that are neither cast spells nor weapon abilities. Those excluded, the general price seems to be weapon price plus staff price with no modifier for overlap.

Here's the summary breakdown:
37600 gp: Staff of Aspects [off by 4500 gp, used druid level not ranger level, and forgot MW cost]
23000 gp: Staff of Authority [off by 4000 gp, doubled cost of plus]
47000 gp: Staff of Dark Flame [off by 2433.33 gp, who knows]
14800 gp: Staff of Accompaniment [off by -400 gp, did not add slotless cost]
58000 gp: Staff of Mithral Might [off by -4000 gp, did not add slotless cost]
180200 gp: Staff of One Hundred Hands [off by -1800 gp, did not add MH at will]
23200 gp: Staff of Radiance [off by -3000 gp, did not add cont Light]
30200 gp: Staff of Spiders [spot on]
37310 gp: Staff of the Avenger [spot on]
100400 gp: Staff of the Woodlands [off by 32233.33 gp, who knows]
109400 gp: Staff of Life [spot on]
