reach question

so my GM is saying a hydra can hit me in melee at 25' away because it has a reach 10' but is huge so also has reach 15'. I am trying to explain that the reach 10' listed is an override of the normal 15'. Can someone clarify?

The number listed is the creature's reach. It doesn't say the creatures reach is that number plus the normal amount for a creature of that size - the number is the final, total number.

Not all Huge creatures have a 15' reach as well. Some only have a 10' reach. It depends on if they are considered Huge (Tall) or Huge (Long). Should be a reach chart in the combat chapter of the core rulebook.

Then consider the Ogre (Space 10 ft.; Reach 10 ft.); does an ogre have 20 ft. reach? No.

And the bear (Space 10 ft.; Reach 5 ft.); does a bear have 15 ft. reach? No.

Show your GM the Diplodocus, which has reach equal to double its space.

I think the GM is misunderstanding something, so I'd start by asking him where he's getting the 15' figure from.

If he says "the space/reach entry", the answer is "thats the space, not the reach". If he says "the creature size and scale table in the CRB", the answer is "hydra are long, not tall". If he says "everything gets the reach listed in addition to <some other arbitrary reach>", ask him to figure out the reach of a great gold wyrm.

Okay, maybe that last is a bit mean.

But tall creatures have greater reach above and below as laterally, anyway.

...then all human characters can attack with their long swords from 10 feet away, because they are medium sized (5' reach) and the stat blocks for any human enemy says they have 5' reach. Thus 10 feet.
