Campaign Mode?

Do we have to play through the entire adventure path to get Campaign Mode credit?

I'm planning on running Hell's Rebels for my home group, but probably not past book three. Can we get chronicles for the books we play?

Yep, you do have to play the entire Path for campaign mode. You could probably alter big parts of a book, though, since you don't have to "run as written".

That is one interpretation. Round these parts we work on the basis once you complete a chapter you gain the appropriate chronicle sheet. In much the same way as when you complete the first part of a three part scenario you gain that chronicle sheet. None of our group have the patience to wait until the end of the campaign to collect 6 chronicles all at once.

If we have got it wrong we have got it wrong but I highly doubt I am alone in doing it my way

If you play an adventure path in campaign mode (issuing chronicles at the relevant points) and due to collective game fatigue tap out part-way through, Venture-Agents aren't going to come knocking at your door to confiscate the chronicles already handed out. Particularly as there's nothing to stop you resuming the campaign at some point in the future.

Hmm... I joined an ongoing AP as a replacement player in book 2. I have chronicle sheets for books 2, 3, and 4. (We're about to start book 5.) I've always thought this was legitimate; what Lamplighter says suggests I shouldn't be getting any chronicle sheets for this.

But, all we're doing is asserting past each other. Can anybody point to where it actually says that either you have to play the whole thing to get any credit, or that you get credit for completing one book?

The way I've heard it is that you must intend to play through the entire campaign - you can't just say "we're playing Books 1-3 in Campaign Mode". And, as Mr. Lewis notes, you won't be hunted down by an elite kill squad if things fall apart.

I don't have a specific reference for you right now, though.

Well, what I do know is for Iron Gods, they allowed retroactive credit for those already playing in campaign mode but you couldn't get the chronicles until you finished the next sanctioned portion at which point you got all of them up to that point. Seems like a good argument for chronicles as you go.

Regardless of campaign or PFS mode, you get a chronicle as soon as you finish the chapter for that chronicle.

This is how my groups have always done it.

I do wish there was a bit more leniency with the rules on this issue, now that it's been brought up.

Considering how incredibly lenient Campaign mode rules are in some respects, not having more flexibility respect to running the whole thing seems especially weird.

It's currently kosher to run an AP with 30 point buy, Race Builder races, gestalt 3PP classes, and a smattering of 5e rules kludged in if you really felt like it. But deciding book 3 doesn't make sense for your party and doing something homebrew or substituting a different published adventure is no good.

For APs, at least, I'd like to see the ability to play campaign mode on a book by book basis. That removes any potential issues with people leaving a group early or joining late, and gives AP GMs a lot more flexibility in how they run things.

The Season 8 Guide does simplify the language on campaign mode, but the Chronicles document still contains this text for Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition (the one I already had handy, emphasis mine):

Quote:
Alternatively, if you are participating in the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path with an ongoing group undertaking the entire, six-chapter campaign, you may receive credit for playing the sanctioned portions of the adventure as if you had played a pregenerated character.

It's good to know that Chronicles can be handed out after each section is completed, but this text should be revisited to clarify the intent.
