How to capture a player?

Advice

So, I've got a session upcoming where one of the players won't be able to make it. I thought it might be interesting to have them captured by the BBEG to interrogate or something. The other members of the group will(I assume) go to rescue their friend.

Now the problem is I'd like a nice way to write them off screen for a session. I could of course just tell them that they woke up the next day and the missing PC never woke anyone up after his watch duty and is no where to be found, but I'd prefer something a bit more interesting or interactive.

The question being, what are some nice ways to abduct a single player that are relatively foolproof. Bonus points if they don't simply vanish into thin air and give the rest of the party some information on who took the party member, where he is held, etc.

High level spells or class abilities are mostly fine. BBEG can buy a scroll or hire a spellcaster for a one time service or somesuch if it is really necessary.

The Exchange

Heavens oracle into veiled illusionist - or half elf ancient lorekeeper to get both colour spray and invisibility on spell list. Should instantly KO the PC. Bring along a henchie to tie up, throw into bag of holding, and done.

What lv PC? This should catch up to a 7th lv PC, not counting gear, if NPC is given 20 point buy.

PCs are 6th. Might be 7 by the time this session occurs.

EDIT: Wow that awesome display is pretty crazy. Never seen that.

I recommend luring them with beer and pizza, then a big net hanging from the ceiling. Pretty sure it's illegal though. Oh wait, did you mean character? Depends on what clues you need to leave.

Remember, "Unconscious creatures are automatically considered willing" (though I still can't type that without feeling sleazy as @#$%). Any of the teleports/dimension door will let you walk in and poof back out immediately once they're unconscious.

Leave no witnesses.

I think he meant the PC-catchers need to leave a trail, so no Ddooring out. I passed him a bunch of groundwalkers, so there should be plenty of trail.

Pizza and beer lure doesn't work on me. Yay!

Yeah, I might go the color spray/sleep heavens oracle route. Might still run into the same issue of them either being told after it happens or making their will saves and trying to get into a fight.

But then again if a spell existed where they wouldn't actually have a possible defense it would be pretty darn abused.

Pizza and Beer is not a bad idea...

Have the party come across a wagon team being attacked by some roving band of small time bad guys. Let them rescue the team. Have the team thank their rescuers with food and drink. End the season here. The next season starts with the players finding out the food and drink was drugged. When they wake up the wagon team is gone with there friend.

Make sure to clear this with the player first, though.

take any class with any spell or ability that remove a target from play (witch's slumber\brawler knockout\hold person etc).

then have the boss bring along one or two minions.each a dual-curse oracle with the 1st level special revolution and have one also cast ill-omen on the target just before using the ability\spell on him. he roll 2 times to save and if any of the rolls seem too high a minion can use an immediate action to make him re-roll it.

for extra creepiness have the oracles take the deaf and wolf-scar curses for a horrific wolf-men silently casting spell at the target before she is knocked out...

*edit* the words on the revolution misfortune might mean that unlike normal hexs one can't be the target of this ability even from some1 else's use in the same 24 hours.

Gentle Rest (Sp): Your touch can fill a creature with lethargy, causing a living creature to become staggered for 1 round as a melee touch attack. If you touch a staggered living creature, that creature falls asleep for 1 round instead. Undead creatures touched are staggered for a number of rounds equal to your Wisdom modifier. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

We're going to need a young priest and an old priest.. or any pair of 1st level clerics with the Repose domain. Alternatively, a single Repose cleric with the Quicken Spell-like Ability feat.

Once they're sleeping, they are helpless (in game definitions).

Helpless:
A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent's mercy.

And once they're helpless, cast any thing you like on em or just fill them full of so many doses of poison that they almost can't save. If they do roll that 20, Repose them a second time and try, try again.

Next week on the forums; "I had a player's PC captured off screen and now they are angry at me..."

Even if the plan is "fool proof" and they weren't going to be there for that session, some players may feel like you have taken away "player agency" by having their pc captured without them having a chance to stop it. You know your player, be sure they will be ok with this.

Well if you want a t-port smash and grab BUT the party can see what happened, how about a Shadow Dancer with a 160 ft shadow walk? They can cast darkness and have some cool d-door feats to add on. They see the SD port over somewhere and then either pulls out a port scroll, or a signature minion of the Big Baddy steps up. And maybe waves or gives the party the finger. I am in favor of the port scroll. More professional.

Even better if on of them rips off something from the SD so they can ID it . . . and find out its someone they know! Or thought was dead!

The wagon idea sounds good and leaves room for a chase scene.

I still like the beer and pizza with a net idea though. . . .

How to capture a player? Chloroform. Duh.

Alternatively, you could use a trail of Cheetos and Mountain Dew.
