Tiny and Small Monstrous Humanoids

Advice

Liberty's Edge

Hey everyone - I figured I'd ask here. I'm playing a dex-to-damage Investigator, and next level I'll be getting my first main transformation spell - Monstrous Physique I. Looking at previous guides (there's no easy way to sort creatures by type, is there?) I've found a severe lack of small (and for future spell levels, Tiny) monstrous humanoids - it's a great spell for an investigator, but I'd love to have a + DEX form. Have there been some changes in recent years that allow for this? If not, I'd be better off just using a 2nd level extract for Alter Self to a Charu-Ka or similar creature :)

(I use weapons and armour, so I do need it to be Monstrous Physique or Undead Anatomy, but that has issues with CLW and the like)

The only small monstrous humanoids I have found are the Charda, Formian Worker, Kappa, Ningyo, and Pukwudgie. You won't get to take advantage of the Charda's speed and ferocity without at least Monstrous Physique II (III for ferocity), however. The others do not have anything useful that you can't get better somewhere else. Most of their abilities just don't translate with the spell, and those that do the Charda has the same or better. I have yet to find any tiny monstrous humanoids, but I only have Bestiary 1-4, for what it's worth.

The PRD bestiary can filter by type and size.

It doesn't look like anything got added to the list (tiny or small) by Bestiary 5.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I am working on a Metemorph Alchemist right now for PFS, so I have done a bit of research into this chain of spells. Here is a short breakdown on what I feel are the best forms, though YMMV as you are dex based.

MP I:

Flying/Land - Gargoyle – Medium, 40' Move, 30' Fly, Darkvision 60’, 2 Claws(1D6), Bite(1d4), Gore(1d4)
Water - Sahuagin – Medium, Aquatic, 30' Move, 30' Swim, Darkvision 60', 2 claws(1d4), Bite(1d4) (Go with 4 armed or primal version if you DM will let you)

MP II:

Flying/Land - Gargoyle (as above but 60' Fly and Freeze)
Derhii - Large, 30' Move, 30' Climb, 60' Fly, Darkvision 60', Scent, 2 Slams(1D6)
Water - Sahuagin (as above but 60' Swim and Speak with Sharks)
Charda – Small, Aquatic, 20’ Move, 60’ Swim, Darkvision 60’, Bite(1d6), 4 Claws(1d4)

MP III:

Flying/Land - Harpy – Medium, 20' Move', 80' Fly, Darkvision, 2 Talons(1D6)
Water - Sahuagin (as above but Blood Frenzy and Blindsense 30'!)
Charda (as above but with ferocity)

MP IV:

Land - Buggane - Large, 30' Move, 30' Burrow, Tremorsense 60', 2 Claws(1d8), Gore(1D8), Rend(2 claws 1D8)
Flying - Nothing new to add
Water - Sahuagin (as above but Blindsense 90'!)

Thanks for the list and points guys! :) Sad to see that there haven't been too many new small-sized ones :(

You could always use potions/wands of reduce person.

Purple Duck (3pp) has at least one book on tiny humanoids. Mine is hiding in my lost files, but they supposedly have a Patreon account with more coming.

A GM I played with back in the Babylonian days had a system for creating differing sizes of races, but I don't remember much of it. A later GM had Familiars set up their own 'race', reproducing due to latent magic. We ran into a talking opossum and squirrel that objected to my having a Familiar! He got an invite to join them once I died!

Purple Duck Storeroom: Tiny Monstrous Humanoids ($1.00) $0.50 has six interesting races you might run past your GM. They make good starts for more, but I had my players craft rationales for their existence and place in the world.

at D20Pfsrd and on sale

Thanks - I was hoping I could avoid 3PP, but I'll run it by my GM at some point :)

if it can i sure as hell cant figure out how

and it's also missing alot of creautes introduced in the smaller books and APs

Go to the global bestiary index, right below the check boxes for which books are a group of filters you can expand, one of them is size.

The PRD only contains the main line of hardcover PF books, d20pfsrd and archives of nethys are broader, but I don't think they have the filtering function.
