Adding new spells or abilities to a staff [Magic Item Creation]

Rules Questions

Hey Folks!

Lets say you have a staff with a 1st level spell, a 2nd level spell, and a 4th level spell (all minimum caster level and none of which require expensive components). The price of said staff would be 13,200 gp (400 gp * 4 spell level * 7 caster level + 300 gp * 2 spell level * 3 caster level + 200 gp * 1 spell level * 1 caster level) and cost 6,600 gp (13,200 gp/2) to craft.

My question is how much would it cost to add a spell to this staff after it has been created? How much for another 1st level spell? or a 6th level spell?

My interpretation would be that adding a 1st level spell (minimum caster level) would only cost 200 gp (200 gp * 1 spell level * 1 caster level). Conversely, I think that you would have to recalculate the full price of the staff after completion and then pay the difference for the 6th level spell (minimum caster level). The price would be 23,000 gp (400 gp * 6 spell level * 11 caster level / 1 charge + 300 gp * 4 spell level * 7 caster level / 1 charge + 200 gp * 2 spell level * 3 caster level / 1 charge + 200 gp * 1 spell level * 1 caster level / 1 charge = 36,200 gp - 13,200 gp) and 11,500 gp (23,000 gp/2) to craft.

PS. How much would a cantrip/orison cost to be crafted into a staff? Would it be crafted as a one half level spell with a 1st level caster?

PPS. Is a staff cast cantrip/orison treated as a prepared cantrip (at will) per charge used? or is it a single casting? how many charges does it use?

PPPS. (Bonus Round) If a staff only has cantrips/orisons what level spell does one need to spend in order to recharge it?

PPPPS. (Bonus Bonus Round) Can you create a custom staff with one of the nonspell abilities of another staff? For example:

4,600 gp: +1/+1 quarterstaff (2,300 gp +2,300 gp masterwork and +1 enhancement for each side of the double weapon)
200 gp: Ray of enfeeblement (200 gp * 1 spell level * 1 caster level / 1 charge)
1,800 gp: Spectral hand (300 gp * 2 spell level * 3 caster level / 1 charge)
12,000 gp: Vampiric touch (400 gp * 3 spell level * 5 caster level / 2 charges)
11,400 gp: apply any metamagic feats (30,000 gp - 18,600 gp)

Would adding this to a staff cost 11,400 gp and 5,700 to craft?

Your numbers are wrong. A staff (or any other magic item) only has 1 caster level. Each spell going into a staff doesn't get to have a different caster level. Also, staffs have a minimum caster level of 8 - you can't have a staff with a caster level below that.

So your example staff would be:

4th level spell: 400 x 4 x 8 = 12,800
2nd level spell: 300 x 2 x 8 = 4,800
1st level spell: 200 x 1 x 8 = 1,600
Total of 19,200 gp.

Adding a 6th level spell to it (Which raises the minimum caster level for all spells to 11th):

6th level spell: 400 x 6 x 11 = 26,400
4th level spell: 300 x 4 x 11 = 13,200
2nd level spell: 200 x 2 x 11 = 4,400
1st level spell: 200 x 1 x 11 = 2,200
Total of 46,200gp

Cantrips are priced as if they had a spell level of 0.5. Actual cost to add a cantrip would vary based on the staffs caster level, as well as how many other spells are in the staff.

It would use charges the same as any other spell. Minimum of 1 charge per use, like all other spells in a staff.

Thanks for the correction! So adding a 6th level spell later would cost 27,000 gp (46,200 gp - 19,200 gp)?

Unless you wanted to make the 6th level spell use more than one charge to activate - then you'd need to calculate the cost again with the new figure based on the # of charges you are requiring.

Since I priced this wrong before let me try again

9,400 gp: apply any metamagic feats (30,000 gp - 20,600 gp)

Adding metamagic feat use to a staff cost 9,400 gp? and 4,700 to craft?

You can do the first part and enchant a staff as a magic weapon by the book. The second ability isn't something you can do and would need to be GM approved.

Thought as much
