Are Characters Limited To Their Starting Skills?

Are characters limited to only building their starting skills as defined by the rulebook or can they gain new skills as play progresses?

Something like a new skill per x number of levels?

Thanks! :)

You can spend your new skill points per level on any skills you want. Spreading them out is often necessary to get a decent score int he skills that you need.

Also, you can put points into skills that are not listed as class skills... the only difference is you don't get the +3 bonus for it being a class skill. A lot of skills (especially Knowledge skills) are worth putting a point into even if they're not class skills, since that way you get to roll. You can't roll a Knowledge skill with no skill points in the skill unless it has a DC of 10 or less (which is almost nothing).

If you're referring to class skills, other skills can become class skills if you multiclass, but there isn't many(any?) way to make a skill a class skill besides that. Actually the Additional Traits feat would do it, to pick up a trait that grants a class skill.

Ah. I think I see the problem. Let's use the barbarian as an example ('cause she's first alphabetically):

Quote:

Class Skills

The barbarian's class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Perception (Wis), Ride (Dex), Survival (Wis), and Swim (Str).

Skill Ranks per Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Class Skills are skills that the class is particularly good at, and you get a +3 bonus is the skill for putting one rank into it. For example if the Barbarian puts 1 rank into Knowledge (nature) her total bonus will be

1 (rank) + 3 (class skill) + Intelligence Modifier.

However she can put points into any skill, whether or not it is a class skill. If she puts 1 rank into Knowledge (arcana) her total bonus will be
1 (rank) + Intelligence Modifier.

At each new level she gets 4 + Int Modifier new skill points that she can put into any skill. It doesn't have to be a class skill or one she had points in before.

Traits.

I frequently take the extra traits feat and add a total of 3-4 skills to my class skill list.

Silver Crusade

I don't usually do that many, but I'll frequently use traits to pick up one or two extra class skills.
