I'm trying to make sense of the Shikigami Kami's Improved Weapon Mastery ability.

Although a shikigami is Tiny, it never provokes attacks of opportunity when it attacks an adjacent foe with a melee weapon.

This ability doesn't make sense. It can't attack adjacent foes with melee attacks, it has no reach. Attacking while occupying the same square doesn't provoke, it's moving into the square that provokes.

I thought maybe it was to prevent AoOs from ranged attacks with Throw Anything, but it specifically says melee weapon.

Was this intended to give the Shikigami 5' reach with Improvised melee weapons? To prevent AoOs from entering the enemy's square? To be incoherent and do nothing?

Looks like it's just a poorly written rule by someone with an incomplete knowledge of the relevant main rules.

I found this post from James Jacobs, which seems to imply that it doesn't provoke for entering the square? But still seems a little confused about what actually provokes.
