How Should I Deal With Replacement PCs once the **SPOILERS** is Discovered?

Jade Regent

Hello Paizo boards. :)

I have a bit of a problem. One of my players was forced to drop from my campaign in the middle of Brinewall Castle. The party has slain Kikonu, befriended Zaiobe, and are now in the middle of clearing out the rest of the dungeon to discover the source of Ameiko's coma.

I'm considering recruiting a replacement for him, but I'm pondering how to handle the point where

End of Book 1 Spoilers:
the PCs find the Amatatsu Seal and open it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd very much like to hear them.

When the Seal was first opened I had everyone who was in the area affected by it, it had been sealed so long the celestial energies within released as an uncontrolled wave (granting mythic abilities).

Later any replacement or new players were introduced and the seal would be revealed an an oath had to be taken swearing loyalty to Amatatsu Ameiko and their quest to free Minkai from its oppressors.

In general I would introduce new characters somewhere reasonably populated, but my players have been collecting new NPCs, back-up PCs and new players all along the way. There's plenty of "red-shirt" NPCs in the caravan who could be upgraded to PC status if needed as well.

Hmm. Reasonable suggestions. That's the part I was worried about: the plot essentially relying on all of the PCs becoming Amatatsu scions.

I also changed it so that the PCs were considered Amatatsu Guardians, not Scions. I didn't want anyone getting any ideas about dumping Ameiko and trying to seize power for themselves.

Scarab Sages

I just made it so the new character was not a Scion. If they proove themselves to be a true ally to Ameiko and the box is opened at a later date I may give them the vision and make them a Scion as well.

I kept my players (currently on book 3) as scions and just had a player join. So far this PC is not a scion and will most likely become one if/when they need it such as a death, complete with near death experience/vision.

If you get a replacement before the box is opened no problem. They could be a captive similar to the she-warrior(forget her name). Depending on the timing maybe they join upon opening the seal?

Very much later in the campaign, the party starts to find ancestral weapons of the other families and, in the last module, they find the other family seals. Maybe just leave the new character as a non-Amatatsu scion, and instead make him a scion of the Shojinawa, Teikoku, Sugimatu or Higashiyama family? Making scions for the other families is actually an after-the-campaign goal described in book six, so it would fit to start already in the campaign.

Just as an example: You find the naginata of the Sugimatu family at the end of module four, so that would be a good moment to describe a "strange resonance" between it and the character in question.

Welcome back Magnuskn!

That's a great idea. :-)

Why, thank you! :) Although I've not stopped checking out the board, I am currently investing my time more in other things. Also, since Mikaze stopped posting, it has been a bit of a de-motivator on that account, too. :(

Too true. :-(

I would've thought Starfinder would draw him back. Alas, so far no. :-(

Maybe this summer...
