Action required to drop style

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

What action is it to drop a style?

I'm asking because it's useful to dwitch from and to reach using dancing spear style.

To stop using an ability is typically a free action. Typical to the point where I'd go with that any time it is not explicitly stated otherwise. Note that even free actions can only be taken on your turn.

Scarab Sages

Note for Spear Dancing Style, I would not allow you to regain reach even if drop the style until your next turn. Like power attack, once you gain the benefit of the style, you need to live with the penalties until the next turn.

Liberty's Edge

Also note that, later in the feat chain, Spear Dancing Reach allows one or both ends of the weapon to be designated as reach weapons for one turn as a swift action. So it wouldn't make much sense to be able to get reach as a free action with two fewer feats.

PS: From Style Feats;
"As a swift action, you can enter the stance employed by the fighting style a style feat embodies. Although you cannot use a style feat before combat begins, the style you are in persists until you spend a swift action to switch to a different combat style."

Presumably, that would include switching to 'no style'. So it'd be a swift action before or after your attack(s) for the round... so you could have either reach or spear-dancing double weapon for any given turn, but not both.

Silver Crusade

Thanks for your replies. You perfectly point out two sides of the argument. And a third 'half way' option, thanks to Imbicatus.

I guess this is just one more thing we'll have to clarify in our house rules document ☺

Sovereign Court

Of note - since it's with style, you ARE required to "drop it like it's hot".

Quoting the introduction of Style Feats: "Although you cannot use a style feat before combat begins, the style you are in persists until you spend a swift action to switch to a different combat style"

The Combat Style Master feat changes that to a free action.
