Barbarian VMC

Rules Questions

Does the barbarian VMC gain access to the core barbarian rage ability or the unchained barbarian rage ability? Can you choose? Can it take the unchained rage powers or only the core ones?

Are there any ways except moment of clarity, calm stance, and spell storing to cast spells or use SP's while raging?

Since it was written before the unchained barb came out i'd say its referring to the core barbarian (supported by the two lists called Core VMC and Base VMC). You can probably talk your GM into letting you take the unchained variant for a home game though.

I haven't looked into the second issue enough to say

Mad Magic helps.

VMC and Unchained Barbarian are in the same book, so it could just as easily refer to Unchained as to Core; the choice is really up to the player, subject to GM ratification.

oh are they? nvm then

also i was looking at d20pfsrd so those lists may not be in the original printing

Yes, VMC is from Unchained. It is thus perfectly reasonable to use unchained Rage, I'd even recommend it. Depending on how much you want to invest, unRage (ok, that sounds wrong!) can be either weaker or stronger than normal Rage. For most games, it doesn't change much until high level.
You can however also argument for cRage: The different parts of Unchained are written independently (for instance the Revised Action Economy explains how core Flurry of Blows is to be adjusted but not how unFoB works).

Ask your GM. Of course, you can only take the Rage Poweres appropriate to the Rage.

@Ridiculon: The "core" and "base" lists refer to the core classes and base classes. UnRogue, unBarb and unMonk are still core classes, and unSummoner is a base class.

I believe I heard that something has to specify it's using the unchained version otherwise it defaults to non-unchained.

That's generally been the case for books other than Unchained. For Unchained, Deadbeat Doom has the right idea: if your group's using Unchained variants in your games, you're already comfortable with modding your games. There is no official ruling on which version to use for an Unchained variant, nor should there be; it's whichever one is right for your group.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. I'll probably go with unchained barbarian because of the temporary hit points and stances.

I have another question. I'm making a Warpriest/Holy Vindicator/VMC Barbarian.

The Holy Vindicator can cast a few spells as immediate actions when it crits/gets crit.

Divine Wrath (Sp)

At 4th level, when a vindicator confirms a critical hit, he may sacrifice a prepared 1st-level spell or available 1st-level spell slot to invoke doom upon the target as an immediate action (using the vindicator’s caster level)....The vindicator can also use this ability in response to being critically hit, even if the attack incapacitates or kills the vindicator.

Divine Judgment (Sp)

At 7th level, when a vindicator’s melee attack reduces a creature to –1 or fewer hit points, he may sacrifice a prepared 2nd-level spell or available 2ndlevel spell slot to invoke death knell upon the target as an immediate action (using the vindicator’s caster level). As vindicators mete out divine judgment, this is not an evil act.

Divine Retribution (Sp)

At 10th level, when a vindicator confirms a critical hit, he may sacrifice a prepared 3rd level spell or available 3rd-level spell slot to invoke bestow curse upon the target as an immediate action (using the vindicator’s caster level)....The vindicator can also use this ability in response to being critically hit, even if the attack incapacitates or kills the vindicator.

Assuming I'm the one who confirmed the crit, would I be able to end rage as a free action and then cast the spell because its an immediate action? I don't see why not, but I figured I should ask anyway.

no, you can't do most free actions when it's not your turn.
