Well, yes, everyone's not equal.
Because you're MAKING them not equal.
When they very well could be equal without you applying random nonsensical penalties for things.
I mean you were totally right when you said:
You don't change the rules of [Insert Game] because someone might lose. You play with grown ups who can handle losing and continue to play/play another round.
You just completely glossed over the fact that you're changing the rules because someone lost. Whether you make it easier or harder on them is irrelevant, you changed the rules regardless.
Which was the point everyone was making for you, but like everyone who makes up a really crappy analogy and then is surprised when it's turned about on them, you decided to just say "That's not the point" instead of actually reading the point the other posters were making.
It's not about "handling loss", it's about handling someone pulling the rug out from under your feet because you lost.
When you lose a round in tennis, you don't start off 15-Love in the other person's favor.
When you lose at chess, you don't start the next game missing your queen and one each of your bishops, rooks, and knights.
When you "lose" at Pathfinder, you don't start with a lost level.

Implying that people that don't play the way that you play aren't grown ups is one of the worst ways to convince people that you're right.

As far as an equal playing field, it's when you start the campaign. Don't like being in a long story where death has a setback, play modules or one-shots.
Or, we could just, you know, not come up with house rules that change the game to enforce that setback.
