Scenario: I have an animal companion where I have gained 4th level in the class that gave me the companion. the companion is now increased in size, plus I have trained it feats, tricks, and skills.
in regards to the below situations, my question is what happens to the animal's size increase when:
1. I retrain from animal bond to something else
2. I gain a negative level, and am no longer 4th level
3. Dismiss the animal, letting it free
4. Cast awaken on the animal and it's no longer viable to be an animal companion
thanks!

The rules as written don't seem to have any clear answer. The most direct interpretation is that the monster just simply becomes a non-entity; as in, it ceases to exist for the sake of the campaign. It's up to the GM what happens to it thereafter, but keeping the size (because it's 'grown up' now) makes the most sense to me.
2. I gain a negative level, and am no longer 4th level
In Pathfinder, you cannot actually lose levels, and thus cannot no longer be 4th+ level.
If you have a negative level, whether temporary or permanent, it causes no negative side-effects on your animal companion, as it is not necessarily a level-dependent variable.

1: Say if you're a druid and retrain from an animal companion to a domain? Animal stays the same size.
2. When you gain a negative level you are still fourth level. You have penalties associated with the neg level, but you still count as a fourth level character.
3. You're still fourth level, so you get an improved version of the companion you're picking as your next one (unless it's one that increases in size at 7th level). The animal you're releasing isn't magically transformed or anything - it's just a bigger animal, as far as I know. When you release it, it stays the same.
4. You now have an awakened, larger animal. Doesn't change in size.
At least as far as I know, the size increase an animal companion gains is permanent and not going to change - many of the companions are smaller than usual for their species (Roc, T-rex) so it's not that odd.
