Stacked Archetype Confusion

Advice

I've only recently found out that one can 'stack' multiple Archetypes for a single Class, but I'm not sure I truly understand it.
For example, can a character have 2 Archetypes affecting a single level of a single Class?
If so, is it all or nothing, or can they be 'meshed'?
For example, could one be a Cleric with both the Separatist AND Ecclesitheurge Archetypes, but really only using the "Bonded Holy Symbol (Su)" aspect of the Ecclesitheurge?

Further, I would assume that stacking would not allow the potential twinkiness of allowing a character to have both Forbidden Rites AND Domain Mastery, thus allowing them to change their Secondary Domain once /day?

Any help in understanding this multiple-Archetype thing would be greatly appreciated!

You can apply multiple archetypes for the same class to the same character ONLY if they do NOT alter or modify ANY of the same class features. You take all of the abilities for the archetypes that are applied.

So, since those two example Archetypes BOTH affect the Cleric's standard Domain ability, they could NOT be stacked?
Gotcha!

Added above.

Correct.

Archtypes can only stack if they don't change or replace the same class features.

So for example if you have the Cleric with several class features, like domains, channel energy etc. If you have one archtype that only effects channel, and another archetype that only effects domains, then you can take both, changing both the domain and the channel class feature.

In your case the Separatist changes the Domain feature and weapons and armor proficiency.

The Ecclesitheurge changes weapons and armor, channeling, and domains.

So these two can't stack.

Clerics don't have a lot of different class features, so most archetypes change the same things and thus stacking is less available.

Actually, perhaps Cleric was the wrong Class to use for an example, as it looks like few to none of their Archetypes stack. But I think I get the idea now!

Here's an example of Arhetype stacking:

For Fighters- one can take the Eldritch Guardian, Martial Master, & Mutagen Warrior archetypes- all at once.

Eldritch Guardian drops Bravery and a couple of bonus feats for a Familiar.
Martial Master drops Weapon Training/Mastery for Martial Flexibility
Mutagen Warrior drops Armor Training/Mastery for Mutagens and Discoveries.

since none of those archetypes replace the same class feature, it is possible to stack them.

Wow that's some serious customization! Would there happen to be a reliable and accurate guide to stacking by Class?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

D20pfsrd.com does not have a "guide", but if you go to a class's page they have an excel type chart with things marked off. If two archetypes are both modified in the same area then they can't stack.

Sometimes I house rule that my players can drop one class features from an archetype to make them stack. Also, keep on mind, when you stack a lot of archetypes the class becomes vastly different, and likely must be played differently. It's kind of making a new class.
