I'm Hiding In Your Closet
|
I notice there are many, many avatar-appropriate pictures just from the Pathfinder sourcebooks that are not available as avatar choices, but which I would very much like to see available as such - for example, I know there are more and better-looking pictures of masked Razmiran cultists than I can presently find, and there's also a good picture of a Dwarven Inquisitor from Ultimate Magic that doesn't seem to be here. There are even some pictures (such as an undead girl with a doll or something) that WERE here, yet seem to have disappeared.
Why are some avatar choices available and not others?

We want more choices also! Some choices are available over others mostly because of their scalability and the retention of detail when they get down to 90x90 pixels in size. Also, sometimes the proportions of the art itself just doesn't look right at that size. If you're noticing avatars disappearing, that's worrisome (as we haven't done that intentionally) and we'll take a look.

I'm not sure why we can't use our own images for avatars. The point of an avatar (for me at least) is to make a poster easily recognisable in a thread or discussion; forcing us to select from a library means we're bound to run across people who share the same "face" which is confusing.
I deliberately went for one which was minimally used, but even then I share it with one other poster. There aren't any left in the library which are completely unused (I think - the "sort by usage" option seems not to actually sort by usage, or maybe includes another confounding factor).

Paizo doesn't have full time moderators; their staff monitor the boards above and beyond their normal duties. Having to block any avatar made out of a)someone else's legal IP, b)someone else's art that they may want to keep the rights to*, or c)an image NSFW on a site that prides itself on being PG-13 at worst would require a great number of resources Paizo just doesn't have and can't really afford to implement with their current business plan.
Or to put it simply...
I think they're trying to minimize vulnerability to legal crap. :/
What he said. :)

IHIYC and Feros have the right of it re: uploading your own images. We simply don't have the bandwidth to sift through recently uploaded images to insure that they follow our Community Guidelines.

Not 100% true these days. One of the on-going For Real™ duties of myself and Community Manager Liz Courts is moderation :)

Being able to sort the existing images by 'number of posts' rather than 'number of users' might help. A lot of people do the 'number of users' sort to find un-used images... which, of course, quickly results in all images being used. However, there are probably a ton of images attached to accounts which seldom or never post.

Yep, it has been! Unfortunately it's just been living at the bottom of my list, but it's still there.
Puts a thick stack of Krabby Dollars, and a large bag of assorted teeth in front of Chris.
Oh dear.
How did that get there. I wonder if that might help push things along. Well, I guess I will just leave it there and turn my head.
