Holding while Two Weapon Fighting

Rules Questions

I was bored and had been looking around for some interesting concepts, as the legal curse choices are getting stale for me. Reading up on some archetypes for the Cavalier, I was reading up on the Dune Drifter (PCS:ISC) and I wanted to ask a legality question.

As we all know, anyone who has fired a gun at least, it would be perfectly logical to "hold" something in the hand on the Barrel of the gun, so I was curious about something.

Would it be possible to hold something in Pathfinder? Like, can I use a whip, then switch to my 2-handed blunderbuss/musket, and "hold" the blunderbuss/musket in 1 hand until I get ready to shoot it?

Now I know this is Roleplay, and I'm not asking for complete realism here, I was just asking the possibilities of how it could or might work comparing IRL with RP.

No, it isn't. You are already trying to game the system. And there is a reasonable excuse for 'realism'- you can't hold a weapon very effectively like that.

What you can do is wear a gauntlet style weapon. Grab a nice cestus. I don't think you can threaten with it while doing the gun, but you still have options, and there is a feat designed for gun and melee TWF.

Are you holding? Did William Holdin' come to the party? You got, Holdin' Caufield in there, man?

Sorry, couldn't help it when I saw the topic. :P

Actually, a Whip is one of the few weapons I know of that you can effectively hold while aiming the barrel of a gun. Now USING the Whip while Aiming the gun is.... yeah you're never going to do that. I'm not saying its easy, nor should am I saying its free. I'm asking if its possible to hold something while equipped with a 2-handed, through use of feats or class skills if nessessary.

Please keep in mind - Equip and Hold are two different things.

But the question wasn't can you use a Whip and 2-handed gun at the same time, the question was can I hold something while shooting a 2-handed gun, and can I hold a 2-handed weapon without fighting with it. To the ready, if you will.

@Scythia - That made me laugh, lol.

In one of the FAQ's Paizo seems to not want you to use your offhand for one weapon, once it has been used for another weapon.

Is there a way to change the title? I think it might be giving the wrong impression.

Too late. You can change your first post and the title, but only for an hour.

You really can hold a uncoiled 10' whip in one hand while firing a rifle without being hindered by it?
We aren't speaking of firing at stationary targets while being stationary yourself. To keep your dexterity bonus to AC you have to be able to move as needed.

Well, since this is gun related...i can't help but advise...You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em...

Logically: Yes you could probably pull this off in real life with some practice. I've taken a lot of shots with a long-barreled firearm while holding my walking stick in my off-hand. It certainly didn't help my aim, but it didn't hinder it seriously enough that I was unable to make relatively easy shots.

In game: Absolutely not. You have two hands that must be fully used when firing a two-handed firearm. You cannot hold anything else in either hand, be it a whip or a sword or a wand or anything else. Sorry bud, just the way the rules are written.

Use a Glove of Storing to "park" the item you dont want to hinder you when using your Two-Handed Weapon.

Example:
Left: Whip / Right: Rifle --> can use whip 1-handed while only holding the rifle with the right hand.

Store whip in Glove (free action) --> can use rifle 2-handed.

@Diengo Rossi - Drat, main reason I asked is because I feel some people think I'm meaning "Can I fight with two handed fighting with a two handed weapon" which is not what I met to say at all. lol

@Rathendar - Thanks for making me laugh. ^-^

@CampinCarl9127 - Yeah, I was thinking that might be the case. I just wanted something simpler than "Drop the Whip then Drop the Gun and stand in the same spot in case I need to move."

@Guru-Meditation - Hm... that would work, thank you.

Next Question: Can I use a 1-handed weapon while "Holding" a 2-handed weapon in my other hand? Example, I'm using the Whip not NOT shooting the Rifle, but I don't want to drop my rifle either. Is it possible to Hold, but not use, a 2-handed weapon in one hand?

Sure. Wielding a 2 handed weapon require 2 hands, but holding carrying it can be done with one hand (unless your strength is really, really low).

Just hook up a V-Tac sling and when you "drop it" it will just be ready to go hanging there on your chest.

I am sure I could "hold" something in my off hand while firing a rifle. I absolutely would not want to be holding something while in a firefight with a rifle!

Scarab Sages

You can hold the musket in one hand and attack with the whip in the other hand, since a whip is a one-handed weapon.

You cannot hold the whip while you are attacking with a 2-handed weapon, whether that's the musket, a great sword or anything else. 2-handed means you need both hands free to use it. Both hands are not free if one is holding something.

Yes, you can hold (but not use) a two-handed weapon in one hand.
