Define "Spell you can cast"?

Rules Questions

Quick question:

For traits like Gifted Adept that give +1 caster level to a single spell "that you can cast", does "spell you can cast" mean "spell on your spell list" or "spell known"?

Aka, can you use it on a higher level spell, or is it only good for 0-1 lvl spells?

Being able to cast a spell doesn't seem to be a part of gifted adept at all. You pick a spell and when (if) you cast it is has +1 caster level. Theoretically a fighter could pick this trait and choose wish as the spell.

Sorry, was thinking Inspired by Greatness and got my +1 Caster Level traits mixed up.

Similar in construction to spell perfection then. I believe you would have to be able to cast it when you took the trait, so at character creation it would be level 0-1 and be a spell known if spontaneous.

This is kind of weird for a trait, as they theoretically represent your background before you even had a class level, but there it is.

The additional traits feat would presumably allow this to apply to a higher level spell.

Traits may be background but they can give benefits you can't make use of at 1st level. Take Honored Fist of the Society for instance where "You increase your ki pool by 1 point". Monks don't get a ki pool until 4th [3rd for unchained].

As a campaign trait, though, I'm not sure it could be taken after first level anyway.

Yeah, wouldn't make any sense as all of these campaign traits are of the "You knew an important NPC and thats why you came to this region in the first place" variety, wouldn't make a lick of sense to say you took it later on.
