1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have an idea for a mini, one-shot adventure and wanted to know what people thought about it before I put too much thought into it. (It's 2:40 am and I can't tell if my mind is clouded! ha ha)

I haven't figured out a hook to get to this place yet, but the PCs will arrive at a small cave entrance. They will enter the narrow passage, and it will look like a regular cave. Dark, moist, and eerie. At the end of this passage is a door of some kind. When opened, it reveals what looks like a gigantic, fun, and colorful workshop. There will be a few different platforms with guys bouncing on them. Each of them will appear human and very seem very happy. They introduce themselves by name and say "I'm a Fungi!" When asked about the shop they will say, "It's our master's shop!" They will let you look around on your own, but if the PCs request to see the "Master", a single Fungi will take them. Along the walk deeper into the cave, you run into many strange monsters and sites. For example, there will be a pothole trap (it's like a pit trap but with lots of pots at the bottom), giant fireflies (flies that are literally on fire), the cave blockhead (a humanoid with a cubed head and no facial features), 3 copycats (3 cats that all copy each other or the PCs movements), and furniture like armchairs (chairs made of arms with pincushion seats). There will be an encounter or two while the PCs walk.

When you reach the door of the Master, the Fungi will knock and let he/she know there are visitors. The Master will ask to have just the Fungi enter. With a perception check you hear a quick yelp. The master will come out, but not the fungi. The master seems nice. But at some point will turn on the PCs and send his strange creatures to attack them. During the fight, one of the creatures will somehow let the PCs know it was once a regular person but was changed by the Master. Only a certain (insert magical item here) can turn everyone back. Not all the monsters are actually people.

Fights over, bad guy taken down or put into custody, day saved, people happy.

My first thought was to have the PCs sent there to retrieve something (maybe the magical item? maybe a certain person?).

I want the workshop to have a strange Charlie and the Chocolate Factory feel. It's a unique magical place, but also can be dangerous.

This is a really rough idea. Please let me know what you guys think, and if you have any advice I would love to hear it! Thanks :)

Should be gnomes instead of humans. Maybe some of them are medium sized, but they still appear as gnomes.

yeah, gnomes sounds good. I like the idea of how they look better than humans.
