Flight, Acrobatics and Attacks of Opportunity

Rules Questions

Situation:
7th Level Witch is currently standing and flanked by two enemies. On her turn she activates her Flight Hex (standard action) and as a move action begins ascending at half speed (30 ft).

Two questions.

1) Can I use acrobatics to avoid the AoOs?

2) If I can. I understand that I would have to move at half speed to not increase the difficulty of the check. Would that make my fly speed 15ft or would it still be 30ft? As I am already moving at half speed.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

1) yes you're moving out of a threatened square
2) 15, you're flight speed up is 30 so you'd need to go half of that.

1. Yes.

2. 15 feet. Since you have to go at half speed in order to not increase the DC by 10. When ascending your full movement is 30ft so to use Acrobatics it should be the 15 feet.

1) Yes.
2) It would halve it again. But a couple of notes:
a) You can't fly straight up (without unchained fly skill rank 20).
b) The half speed for gaining altitude is there to replace the diagonal movement cost of moving up at an angle (see FAQ). Personally I'd just drop the half speed rule and count the diagonals just like you would for movement in 2-d.

So you normally have a base movement of 60? That's pretty fast.

A normal human with a normal base movement of 30 would need to fly up at half speed and use Acrobatics at half again so would only be able to move 5 feet. Which would mean that at the end of their move action only moving 5' they would still be in a square threatened by both enemies. Which would mean that their next move action they would still ascend and use acrobatics and therefore only move another 5'.

Total of 10' requiring two move actions and two Acrobatics checks.

A character with a base speed of 40 or more could move 10' in that first move action which might put them out of threat range. If they wanted to use their second move action to continue ascending, they probably would not need Acrobatics at all, so could move at just half speed instead of quarter speed and therefore could move much farther in the second move action if they wish.

No one said they were flying straight up.

The OP said they are using Flight Hex. That's why its 60 feet.

This isn't true. You can fly straight up with a DC 20 fly check. The unchained skill unlock allows you to fly straight up at full speed (not halved) if you make a DC 35 fly check.

Core Rulebook Fly Skill:

Flying Maneuver
Move less than half speed and remain flying DC10
Hover DC15
Turn greater than 45° by spending 5 feet of movement DC15
Turn 180° by spending 10 feet of movement DC20
Fly up at greater than 45° angle DC20

Unchained Rules Text:
20 Ranks: A successful DC 35 Fly check allows you to fly straight up at full speed. You are considered two size categories larger when determining wind effects on Fly checks.

Are you unfamiliar with the fly spell?

This isn't true. You can fly straight up with a DC 20 fly check. The unchained skill unlock allows you to fly straight up at full speed (not halved) if you make a DC 35 fly check.
