Dresden's Fantasm

Homebrew and House Rules

This is inspired by a trick Harry Dresden used in one of the Dresden files novels, there isn't a spell that does the same thing so I thought I'd make my own.

School Illusion (compulsion)[mind-affecting]; [/b]Level[/b] wizard 2, bard 2
Casting Time 1 Standard Action
Components V
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature
Duration 1 day/level
Saving Throw will negates(harmless); Spell Resistance yes(harmless)

You create an illusion of the immediate area inside the subject's mind giving them the ability to "see" their surroundings. This illusion does not extend to living creatures. The target of the spell does not suffer penalties to movement or other actions taken that would otherwise be hampered by invisibility, all creatures however are treated as though they were invisible unless the target has another way of seeing them.

Dresden's Fantasm Greater:
LVL Wizard 4, Bard 4

.
As Dresden's Fantasm except living creatures are treated as being visible.

Sovereign Court

In the books I'd say it was more like 1 round per level duration, not one day per level...

It's basically a work around for blindness, right? Or darkness, clouds, invisibility, etc.?

It's a real neat design space. It doesn't cure blindness, but just bypasses it for a while. So it should be of lower level than remove blindness. I also think duration should be shorter, like 1 minute per level. Maybe the greater version could be 1 hour per level?

I can see it as an illusion spell or a divination spell.

Okay, I give up. Why and when would you use this spell?

Oops, yeah, it was supposed to be one round per lvl, I copied the components from another spell and must have forgotten to change that.

You'd use it when you want to turn out the lights and be the only one whose able to see, or as a temporary cure for blindness.

Darkvision is the same level and lasts for hour per level.

I admit, you don't get remove Blind/Deaf until 3rd level spells. I guess it has a small niche in that way.

You could use it to see in smoke, obscuring mist, deeper/true darkness, when blind, etc.

If you could "take away layers", you could see through walls, corners, inside rooms, etc. Technically the spell has to have that info, it's only placing the wall in the way to make it "true to the environment". If you can have a gradient control over it, you could add a utility level on clairvoyance.

Perhaps something for the fourth level greater version?

I dig it, mostly cause I like Dresden Files. Feedback though:
-As mentioned, round/level makes sense for the base version, but maybe minute/level for greater? At 4th, it's
-I imagine you also wanted Sorcerer in addition to Wizard, I would also say this would be a cool little spell for Witches and Magi too.
-Flavor wise, I think it makes sense for the spell to have an area field too, otherwise you could cast this on someone, plane shift into some where neither the caster nor the target's been and they can still "see" which I don't think matches the flavor of the spell. Maybe 400 feet + 20 feet/level? Maybe a clause about new terrain added via spells too?
If you want it to be that powerful though, don't let me stop you though. It is a niche spell regardless, just imo.

Scarab Sages

Greater is mostly equivalent to Echolocation which is a 5th level spell.
